Vice President Joe Biden will tour the flood devastation across Colorado's Front Range on Monday, and while his itinerary has yet to be revealed, residents and officials in Boulder County worry that such a high-level visit would stretch the area's exhausted resources to the limit.
Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle said Friday that he has been contacted about what resources his department would be able to provide should Biden visit the county next week. Pelle said he doesn't have any to spare.
"Our resources are still tied up," he said. "With roadblocks and escorts and all the things we need, we're just not able to free up the resources to help if he comes. If he does, it has to be another agency."
Pelle said his deputies and staff have had their hands full more than a week's worth of rescue and recovery operations following the historic flooding that has ravaged parts of Boulder County and the Front Range.
"They're working long hours and haven't had a day off in a long time," he said.
The White House announced Thursday that Biden and his wife, Jill, will visit the flood zone on Monday. Details of the visit have yet to be revealed.
Boulder police Cmdr. Carey Weinheimer could not comment on whether the department had the resources to provide security for Biden's visit, simply saying, "We're stretched thin. We along with every other law enforcement agency in the county."
Sarah Huntley, a spokeswoman for the city of Boulder, said that while city officials have not heard from the White House about providing security, if asked, the city will do what it can to help.
"If the vice president were to come to Boulder we would do all we could to provide all the resources we would be able to provide," Huntley said.
But Boulder resident Donna Baase said she has seen how hard local law enforcement has worked since the flooding began last week, and thinks the city and county should not have to divert resources to staff a visit by Biden.
"Our law enforcement has been amazing with what they're doing, and we need them on the job, not escorting and protecting the vice president," she said. "We don't need our law enforcement resources going to that."
Baase said local congressmen have been touring flood areas and the flooding has been all over national news, so she thinks Washington, D.C., is getting a clear enough picture of the devastation.
"I actually wish he would stay in Washington and do some other things there," she said. "It's great to know they know we're here, but we're being well represented in the national news and I don't know if his visit gives us any more moral support.
"I just don't think we need Joe Biden to be here."
Just keep him away from an AR15 Shotgun.....
Ping
lol...exactly!
In 1927, if some VP had shown up at the Mississippi flood episode...it would have been the VP, his traveling secretary, and a chauffeur. The VP probably would have been armed, and the chauffeur would have had a shotgun in the trunk of the car. They would have traveled for a full day by train...just to get to the affected area.
Sure, there’s nothing wrong with having to pull needed resources to protect this IDIOT for an “I’m concerned” photo op.
Just like a rat ....take take take .... Biden and his handler in thief need to park AF1 and 2 and stay out of the way of real people trying to recover their lives.
Anyone who would have their photo taken with these two socialist squirrels doesn’t deserve help IMO but that’s for another day.
Folks need help up there. Not idiots impeding the help for a PR dog and pony self promotion tour.
Stay safe !
Boulder County, special needs county inhabited by progressives. Not all, but many. Many other counties were hit by the floods.
But he should probably let his wife hold it...idiots shouldn't be allowed to play with guns
Arm the women with full bladders and shotguns.
Those morons at the White House just can’t catch a break, can they? If they don’t go, they’ll be called callous and uncaring. If they go, they’ll get in the way and disrupt the rescue/cleanup efforts. Their best bet is to just dump a pile of Disaster Relief money on Boulder County, get out of the way, and let those people rebuild their lives.
Oh, I suggest that he and his entourage come by train...
“Biden doesn’t need protection. The universal consensus is that he ain’t worth killing.”.......
Just send a check Joe and save a lot of consternation.
Until recently, wasn’t he taking AF2 for a 20 minute flight to go play golf instead of being driven?
Strap him to a donkey, and slap it’s ass, hard!
Hand him a shovel and boots. Dem bastard hasn’t done an honest day’s work in his life. Of course, somebody would have to show him which end of the shovel to pick up. But that should be enough training for Plugs.
Thanks for the ping.
I hope you’re feeling better.
