Alaska Glacier Thaws, Ancient Forest Emerges

News that will no doubt spark global warming debates, an ancient forest floor has surfaced thanks to an Alaska glacier thawing. According to Live Science, trees in the forest are at least 1,000 years old.

Stumps and logs coming from the thawing glacier were first noticed 50 years ago, but the forest has begun to emerge only recently. Scientists from University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau noticed more trees popping up while studying the thawing Mendenhall Glacier. Many of the trees on the Alaska glacier, which is a 36.8-square-mile river of ice flowing into a lake near Juneau, are reportedly upright.

I did this once when they we claiming a 60’ rise. Calculate how many cubic miles of ice would need to met to raise sea level by 14’.

It takes a while, but basically figure out the square miles covered by water on the planet, and figure out the volume it would take to fill it up, then figure out the square miles of available land and how much ice would need to be sitting on land waiting to thaw.

I believe my answer was every square mile of available land needed to be under about 20 miles of ice. I know there is quite a bit of error in the math, but it is all on the side of the numbers being to low since quite a bit of ice is already in the ocean, and the earth is not a flat plane, so the volume goes up with altitude. What a bunch of F’n morons these people think we all are.

We can’t.

Science and facts only matter to Statists when they can be manipulated to make a point for their advantage.

Explain to me how I am going to use this information to stop the democrat controlled legislature in California from enacting a Carbon Tax?

Tell them it would be...
A) Racist
B) Homophobic
C) Sexist
D) All the above

They don't really give a s*** about any science or facts. They have pandering to do and money to extort.

Definite proof warming and climate change is a natural cycle.

How about some totem poles, made from ancient trees? Great for Juneau and Klowack parks.

The horror. Why don’t they just stop killing the trees. It hurts them, the cutting.

If it wasn’t for global warming, Al Gore would be living off of his senate and vp retirement and sharing half with his ex misses. Now he has more money then he can ever spend.

I've been to the Mendenhall Glacier. In 1980. It ends in a lake surrounded by forest. It is hardly a harbinger from the frozen wastelands. You can take a bus ride to visit it, not far from town. That it has tree stumps in it is not surprising.

Co2 does not affect climate . The Sun's solar cyle does (as it created the mini ice age during the last several hundred years. temperates have correlated with the Sun's solar cycle not C02 levels. The Sun's solar cycle is the smallest it's been in a a 100 years. solar cycle 24 is much smaller then the previous ones and 25 will be even smaller. The declining solar cycles mean that the next several decades will be much cooler than now. some are saying another mini Ice age.

The Earth is cooling as the following link and graph show. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3067952/posts

CET temperature data from the UK Met Office: “The overall annual temperature shows a diminution of pretty much a full degree Celsius over the last 13 years.” Here’s the chart:

you spread liberal media lies that are MEANT to grow government and enslave us.

a million Earths fit into the Sun . the sun is a Star .

funny that you and leftists concentrate on a gas that is 0.00039 of the atmosphere but ignore the sun's cycles that correlate with temperatures. The Earth would be -455 Fahrenheit if the Sun weren't there.

http://www.skyandtelescope.com/news/The-Weakest-Solar-Cycle-in-100-Years-216752671.html

“If this trend continues, there will be almost no spots in Cycle 25, and we might be going into another Maunder Minimum,” Penn states. The first Maunder Minimum occurred during the second half of the 17th century. Almost no spots were seen on the Sun during this time, which coincided with Europe’s Little Ice Age.

amazing the brainwashing of the media and gov. and the trust people have in gov even on this site.

what a coincidence that gov funded scientists happen to isolate a product of capitalism( C02) as causing global warming but they ignore the Sun's Solar cycles. there isn't even any warming but cooling coming . so i hope you liberals don't live in the North.. so why are many on this site helping the liberal media and gov enslave us and grow gov and destroy this country by spreading their lies?

So it was warmer 1000 to 2300 years ago?

When Greenland was green land.

I’m a little confused here...the forest was 1000 years old or the forest existed 1000 years ago?

Just want to know what time frame the forest was actually living.

Personally I don’t think the Medieval Warming Period was so bad. Back then you could grow grapes in England; it’s too cold to grow grapes there now. And the resulting boom in farm production pulled Europe out of the Dark Ages. On the other hand, it also caused overpopulation in Scandinavia, leading to the Vikings going forth to find more land for their surplus sons.

My guess is they are a little less than 1000 years old, which would put the forest squarely in the Medieval Warm Period.
