Freedom without authority is anarchy. Authority without freedom is tyranny. Wherever there is freedom, there is legitimate authority.

I no longer believe that government should even own a school or run one.

I believe it’s feasible, but we probably will have to completely abandon and dismantle the present education system in order to rebuild any educational system with merit or virtue.

Yes, I was wondering about this as well. Quite odd.

Neither of my parents (born in 1942 and 1954) were spanked. It wasn’t common in all families “back then.”

We all turned out just fine without our parents hitting us.

Well, I do think my mom hit me once (barely), in the heat of the moment, when I did something dangerous. It wasn’t a pre-mediated action. Which I think is the worst — parents who tell the kids they are going to have a spanking/beating/whatever, calmly sit them down, dole it out, etc. I truly can’t understand that, but I guess it’s just some sort of cultural difference.

I never, ever use “shiz” in actual conversation, nor am I using it as “ghetto slang.” I just didn’t think this was the appropriate place for a naughty word. I’ll choose another replacement next time.

One cannot be conservative if she is anti-spanking? Keep in mind, I’m anti-corporal punishment in schools, and yes, I don’t plan on using it on my children nor do I think it is generally very effective — but I do not think it should be illegal, or terribly of parents who spank.

You can be very tough on discipline without spanking. I couldn’t get away with shi- er, crap when I was a kid.

Also, 3/4 of my grandparents were quite conservative. None of them spanked their kids.

Yeah, that makes sense. How could we possibly have laws if idiot teachers can’t hit kids?

Also, I’m not sure why you are getting on my case for substituting a “z” for a “t” in an effort to be less vulgar, when you are missing quite a bit of punctuation and spacing, and have concocted a novel and creative way to spell Jesus.

What good are laws if they aren’t enforced?

Some of the parents deserve corporal punishment.

Amen!

When I was in school, you screwed up and you got whipped!!

Damn straight...the paddle displayed on the wall on my Principal's office had three holes drilled in it to lessen wind resistance as it swiftly descended to make contact with the student's hindquarters.

I would never give someone else the permission to hit my kid. Ever. Hit em, and I’ll hit you back.

You mean you don't want a public sector union goon hitting your children? How liberal of you!

Funny that I see a lot of opinions here about how bad public school teachers are and how they indoctrinate instead of teach but a lot of those same people think nothing of letting that same teacher hit their kids.

Teachers were a much better class of people back in the fifties and sixties. Now? Anti-Christian commies, by and large.

I have been in schools that beat kids simply for having the wrong answers on their homework.

4th. grade for me. One swat with the paddle for each missed spelling word. Spelling test was on Thursday, teacher graded the papers Thursday night, Friday morning, line up for your swats. Girls and boys alike.

I don't know what the girls did but every boy in class wore every pair of underwear they owned on Fridays.

I don't agree with that "teaching plan", just reporting it.

studies that show children who experience corporal punishment are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety

Well! That explains why us “baby boomers” and every generation before us ALL suffer from depression and anxiety.

It was because EVERY ONE OF US HAD OUR BUTTS WHACKED as children. After the 60’s most children where happy and free because they no longer had to “meet the board of education” when they were bad.

Mystery solved....as simple as dispensing with a paddling.

If parents were ALLOWED to discipline their own kids at home, there wouldn’t be need for punishment in schools.

Kids today already know, “If you spank me I will have you arrested”.

How asinine is this ! Government employees are authorized to strike our children but a parent can be jailed and the child orphaned out for doing the same thing !!! THINK this through ! I personally don’t have a problem with delivery of an occasional swat to MY child’s butt but certainly don’t want a government employee authorized to do the same nor anyone else for that matter! Simply quarantine the child to the front office and call a parent to pick him/her up for a cooling off period of at least a day. Giving teachers (government employees) this much power allows them to teach in an adversarial atmosphere which terrorizes some kids and makes none safe regardless of their behavior. DO NOT give government employees the option to ‘teach’ with the fear of physical beatings hanging over a child’s head.
