The Cruz Campaign Against ObamaCare

So House Republicans have passed and sent to the Senate a budget that includes no funding for the Affordable Care Act, setting up a political showdown that could result in a government shutdown. We wish the GOP luck, since we support the policy if not the strategy.

That starts with Senators Mike Lee (Utah) and Ted Cruz (Texas), who joined with a handful of conservative groups to force Speaker John Boehner's hand. In July they had vowed to mobilize a grass-roots "army" to support ObamaCare repeal. The legions never arrived, but the activists still insisted that any continuing resolution to fund the government had to zero-out ObamaCare.

When Mr. Reid does send a budget back to the House, the question is what the GOP does then. If it passes another budget with the defund-ObamaCare provision, the Senate will refuse again, and we are headed toward a partial government shutdown. This won't be the end of the world, but the politics are treacherous and unpredictable.

When Mr. Cruz demands that House Republicans "hold firm," he means they should keep trying to defund ObamaCare even if it results in a shutdown that President Obama will blame on Republicans. It's nice of him to volunteer House Republicans for duty. The supposedly intrepid General Cruz can view the battle from the comfort of HQ while the enlisted troops take any casualties.

The Lee-Cruz strategy, to the extent it's about more than fund-raising lists or getting face time on cable TV, seems to be that if the House holds "firm" amid a shutdown, then the public will eventually blame Mr. Obama and the Democrats, who will then fold and defund ObamaCare.

The question is how to oppose ObamaCare when Republicans control only one house of Congress.

Yeah, we absolutely can't have a shutdown- the last time we got blamed for it... and overall, we picked up some seats. This time the news is even worse- Unlike 1995, Americans say they would blame GOP, Democrats equally for shutdown . Let's not do anything that makes any sense...

Like most here, I am squarely in Cruz’s and Lee’s camp here. The DC leadership is a failure. Right now, they are committing political suicide for themselves and the party.

If the House holds firm long enough, Obamacare IS defunded, notwithstanding what the Senate or President might do.

Ted Cruz and Mike Lee are the only two Republicans in the US Senate who CONSISTENTLY make an effort to actually CONSERVE, in my humble, but usually correct opinion.

Therefore, use those two Senators to compare and contrast the present opponents to Old-Style Republican Cornyn.

My guess is that someone on the TEXAS PING list personally knows a superb future Senate candidate, cut from the same cloth as Cruz and Lee.

Yep, it is a dirty job, but we need to reach out to these future candidates, and ask them to run for Federal office for the good of their children, grandchildren and their descendants.

We claim to be “Conservatives,” but what are we focused on Conserving?

Where are the men and women that are willing to be candidates to conserve what we want conserved?

The New Republican Party starts when YOU step up and act.

What has each of us done to encourage and recruit men and women to be candidates to conserve what is left of our State or Country?

How have we “failed to communicate?”

Counting on Boehner,Ryan and Cantor to be the point men in the above is like counting on winning the lottery to pay your property tax bill.

Better to stop Cloture in Senate as Cruz is calling for, even though the Senate rules are hard to get people to understand.

Well they ARE on the side of big business and Obamacare will be BIG business for the elites who stand to make fortunes by raping the American taxpayers who will not be able to pay double taxes very long for a healthcare system that is obviously designed to maximize profits by withholding treatment unless you fit certain molds.

Wake up closeted RATS. The United States hasn't had a budget in years. And that's part of the problem.

Cruz suggested, and I agree, that the House respond by we sending smaller CR bills back to the Senate that provide funding for the government “one department at a time” - starting with the military, and naturally never including a cent for Obamacare.

I’m sure the GOP-e is telling Cruz: “Hey Ted, don’t get wrapped around the axel on this. You can’t win. It’s OK to attack something to pick up a few votes, but don’t make waves for the rest of us. Besides, we’ll exempt ourselves from this thing that the rest of the masses are stuck with. Remember Ted, to get along you gotta go along.”
