If the GOP had stuck with Cruz, I would say at least 10-15 Dems would have gone with them to vote against funding Bambicare. That is, in theory, they would have been voting for the funding, but basically they would have gotten Obamacare off their backs. Dem constituents don’t like it anymore than GOPers.
A delay does not prevent the eventual victory of an effort to defund. It does buy time, though, to make that happen.
The House, since it’s a constitutional power, can ALWAYS vote to defund. With implementation scheduled for Tuesday at 0001 hours, a delay is not a bad thing.
We must keep our eyes on the prize: REPEAL.
First best is Repeal
2nd best is defund
3rd best is delay
4th best is stripping provisions of the bill
Implementation is a LOSS. That’s what we’ve been fighting to prevent. A delay is a temporary prevention of implementation.
I agree that delay will help. Also, we talk as if “they” were going to suffer from Obamacare. Well, we’ll all suffer. Is that what anybody here wants?
Programmers hopeful....
I went on his Facebook page and left him several messages!!!
It is not Cruzmentum.
Fact is Manchin is on the NRSC target list and Congresswoman Capito is a high quality candidate that will challenge him.
Manchin is safe until 2018. He just doesn’t like getting phonecalls that don’t backslap him.
This is another positive of the Cruz talk. Any tiny concession Obama or the Democrats make on Obamacare this week will appear like they caved to Cruz.
You are right. It is Jay Rockerfellar who is retiring and Capito is running for the open seat.
Close, but I think this is the same theater as when Obamacare passed the House. Manchin will vote against cloture only after the cloture motion succeeds (do you really think 41 Republican senators will vote against cloture?). That way he can proudly show himself to be a conservative. If he needs to be the 60th vote for cloture, he will vote for cloture. Watch WHEN Manchin votes - if it is late in the vote, that means that he was standing next to Harry Reid until the issue was no longer in doubt.
This is what happened in the House on the original Obamacare vote - the "Blue Dog" (lap dog) Demoncrats waited until the end of the vote before Pelosi allowed them to vote no.
Agreed, if they actually leave that provision in. But they won’t. You can bank on it. The best we get is a one year delay in implementation.
That is good news, then. If they strip out the language and give themselves an exemption we can beat them silly with it in 2014.
2014 is a great year for another Contract with America. Make it simple covering issues that 60%+ of voters support. No gun control, no climate control, pro-growth, pro-job policies. Let unions choose between jobs or Democrats.
I can live with delay also. We just need to avoid full implementation at all costs. Not because it will work but because it won’t matter if it works or not it will be so tied into the way health care is ran that it will be even more difficult and costly to extricate. I do believe that the horror stories of tripling premiums are going to increase and people are going to get angry possibly making 2010 look like a non event. The only question is will the GOP be smart enough to direct that anger at the Democrats.
