The city’s public school system has a backlog of more than 400 teacher disciplinary cases because the teachers union is refusing to help appoint hearing officers as required, a new lawsuit brought by the city charges. The foot-dragging by the United Federation of Teachers has led to the appointment of just 19 arbitrators to oversee teacher misconduct and incompetence cases – well shy of the minimum number of 39 agreed to back in 2010, the Manhattan court papers say.
“Year after year they keep delaying and the backlog keeps getting bigger,” Mayor Bloomberg said on his weekly WOR radio appearance Friday. “It prevents having a fair hearing for teachers who should be cleared of any charges, it allows teachers who should not be in front of our kids through incompetence or inappropriate conduct to continue collecting a paycheck [and] the public’s paying for all of this.”

Why doesn’t the city appoint hearing officers from the community and get on with the firings?
Appointing a hearing committee from the Union is like getting more foxes to judge a fox.

Get rid of tenure and many of the problem teachers would be fired. ENOUGH! Teachers should have the same risk of losing their jobs if they cannot teach or are just indoctrinating.
..but yet the CTA and the like will do nothing to help protect teachers from violence in the classroom...

The only time I’ve ever seen any get off was when we ran out of money; the newer, non-tenured ones went first (the established ones wouldn’t give concessions to save the newbies’ jobs), then they even started to eat into the “least-tenured”. We need it to happen more, though; when Newark NJ laid off 160 cops it was because their union was weaker.
imagine if there were no teacher’s unions.
teachers would sink or swim based on performance. like everyone else who calls themself a “professional”.
Naturally they aren’t helping, while waiting for hearings these people continue full pay and benefits for sitting on their butts and the union Aholes continue to pull in their dues payments. Remove 400 people from the dues roles cuts union money, so it’s not hard to see why the union doesn’t want hearings.
