Given your location and cultural background, your positions make sense....but what you need to keep in mind is the fact that even in NorCal, you are WAY, WAY out on the wing of the Bell Curve. Most of the USA is very, very different, even in some of the more liberal states.

Similar dichotomies can be found in Illinois (Chicago vs. rural), Michigan (Detroit vs rural), New York (NYC vs. rurual) where a liberal city dominates the state political culture.

The few liberal states where that dichotomy doesn't occur are those states where the "big city" pretty much encompasses the entire state, due to the small area outside the city limits.
