Reid: Senate will reject second House plan

WASHINGTON — The Senate will reject another government funding proposal from House Republicans, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Monday.

“We are not going to do anything other than wait for them to pass our CR, because otherwise government is going to shut down,” the Nevada Democrat said at a press conference. With just over eight hours remaining to avert a government shutdown, the House is expected to send back another funding proposal after Reid rejected an earlier bill.

The Senate earlier on Monday voted down a bill passed by the House on Saturday, which attached a one-year delay of Obamacare and a repeal of the medical device tax to government funding.

Politico reported that the House Republicans plan to bring a bill to the floor Monday that would fund the government and tack on a one-year delay of Obamacare along with the so-called Vitter amendment, which would take away the federal government subsidy that lawmakers and their staffs get for healthcare.

Reid said the Senate would reject that plan.

“We are not going to change Obamacare,” he said.

“We are not going to be negotiating on this … Our negotiation is over with. And I’ve said that for two weeks,” he added.

Reid said it was “disingenuous” for Speaker John Boehner to attach the Vitter amendment to the funding bill, given that he, like all lawmakers, has been aware of the federal subsidy since the beginning. Earlier Monday, Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer of California suggested that members who did not believe lawmakers or the staffers deserved the subsidy should simply give it back to the treasury.

Reid said they would also reject a one-week or several-day government funding bill, an idea that has been floated by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

“I heard the idea of a short-term extension floated. Let me be very very clear: The Senate’s bill is a short-term extension. That’s what it is. This is a six-week funding bill, that’s all it is, six weeks. If we can’t pass this, we’re really truly entering the banana Republican mindset,” Reid said.

Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer summed up the reasoning for not negotiating.

“If we give an inch on the [government funding bill], they’ll take a mile on the debt ceiling,” he said.

“With a bully, you cannot let them slap you around … today, they slap you five or six times, tomorrow it’s seven or eight times,” Reid echoed. “We are not going to be bullied.”

“We are not going to do anything other than wait for them to pass our CR, because otherwise government is going to shut down . . ."

So who are the extremists and which party is unwilling to compromise?

All the house is doing is giving the peasants the same one year extension granted to labor unions and business.

Clear admission that the Dems are responsible for any "shutdown", as they will not negotiate.

If Reid was a Repub, the state-run media would be using these statements as proof of wanting a shutdown. But since Reid is a Dem, they cover him.

Don't you know that only the good die young? Oh wait, Reid's about 108 yrs along and Pelosi and Boxer might even be older than that. Guess the evil wicked blackhearts also live on. My bad

So, reid is more powerful than the president? how does the dirt bag have the authority to refuse to put a bill up for a vote? I have looked at the position description for the senate “leadership” and it does not state anywhere he has that authority....

So, they say that if the Obamacare socialist nightmare isn’t funded, they’re going to shut down everything but essential government services.

Doesn’t sound like much of a threat to me.

It's not much of a threat, but it's not much of a gift, either. Most of the furloughed people will get back pay when there is a budget, and will have done even less work than they normally do, i.e., zero, because they will have been on paid vacation.

Now, with legislators, that's usually a plus, because most of what they do is destructive. But with staff, I'd like to believe they provide some minimal value.

If and when government stabilizes why would/should government employees be given added vacation pay? It seems that a House controlled lesser budget could account for days not worked. The heck with padding employee pay checks that are already way above the average that Republicans have cited has fallen for ordinary workers. Of course I really don’t expect politicians with their staffs to see things in such a light.

As for Reid, I hope to be alive to take a bodacious Obama on that sorry piece of sewage’s grave.

THANK YOU! That sure does make it easy!

I read the DNC is extremely low on money, so let’s not forget to call the Dems, too. We don’t want to embolden them more than they already are, and our calls, together w/their low contributions to the DNC might at least get them to keep their mouths shut.

I dislike Reed very much. The one thing good I’ll say about him is that it doesn’t take him a week to figure out what his next move is. Contrast that with our Speaker of the House.

Boehner, are you listening?

Also swept under the rug is the fact that the House passed a stand alone bill ensuring military members who are required to keep working will get paid. It passed unanimously!

Reid’s ignoring that one too along with a complicit Media.

Reid and Reid alone refuses to ensure the military gets paid for the work that they will continue to do.

CALL YOUR SENATORS AND TELL THEM TO DEMAND A VOTE ON THE MILITARY PAY PROVISION SENT TO THEM BY THE HOUSE!!!

Well of course they are going to reject it. So why even send another bill? The bill that was sent on Friday was a good compromise. Why not just stick with it. I’d say 4-5 days into a shutdown the Dems might be more willing to negotiate.
