House Approves Backpay for Furloughed Feds

The House voted unanimously Saturday morning to approve a bipartisan bill ensuring furloughed federal workers receive backpay once the government shutdown ends.

The vote on the Federal Employee Retroactive Pay Fairness Act was 407-0. Twenty-five members didn't vote.

The measure now moves to the Senate, where it is expected to pass. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) had introduced a Senate version of the bill earlier this week.

It’s disappointing they didn’t add a rider to open all the parks and forests (and the ocean they closed).

Retroactive pay is criminal!!!

There’s no shutdown, just a paid vacation.

Every member of the House should lose their job!

If they are going to get back-pay, then they should have an appropriate number of vacation days taken away from their account.

So glad that they could look after constituency number one: the federal worker.

And what, they’ll pull out money to pay all the concession operators who have lost money from the shutdown? Will they pay the furloughed employees of those private enterprises? What about those that service federal contracts but aren’t directly paid by the feds? Will they get their money?

Two Americas is right. We are all equal, but some are just a tiny bit more equal.

Could be good strategery at work. Here’s the optimistic view:

If the House refuses this, they look like the Barrycader, pain-inducers.

Also, this will enrage the public. The public may insist they go back to work for the money, which only pressures the Senate to approve mini-CRs that the House sends (w/o 0bamacare).

What is worse:
Paying them to do nothing?
Or paying them to cause trouble for Americans?

I think we come out ahead with these paid vacations.

Exactly. Too many people on this site don’t get it.

This was a brilliant move by the Republicans. The Senate is almost certain to pass it and obama to sign it. As soon as that happens, the whole democrat line about not compromising or doing piecemeal funding goes right out the window.

You are right on!!! Many Freepers don’t grasp that by getting this bill passed in the house and senate...and...Obama will sign it...the Democrats have caved in!!! The Pubbies should now go public and show the entire country how the low life Democrat and Obama are (Hypocites)!!! Hang in there Pubbies...you will come out on top. You are already there...except the braindead Obamabot media continues to live in the Obamabot “Bubble” of fantasy. Obamacare has failed miserably on all counts!!!

What I’d give for a job that furloughed me, couldn’t fire me, and then paid me all the back pay after the furlough ended.

What is stopping you from applying for federal employment? They employ people in most occupations, in all areas of the country.

BTW, no retroactive pay for the furlough days a couple of months ago. Also looking at additional furlough days in 2014 as well as layoffs. This is for DoD - unsure how other agencies are affected, if at all. DoD must cut $50 billion again this year. US Army (military) will reduce to 490,000, which is about the size of the entire force we sent to Saudi Arabia in the first Gulf War.

For a while I was beginning to believe the Republicans were serious about cutting back on government costs. Now it shows that they are just posturing in a political frame of reference. If they had tied the delayed payment to keeping only necessary functions I would have a much better feeling about their actions. I am hoping and wondering if there is a Cruz or Lee who can step forward and keep the ‘tea party’ going.

Yeah, actually if census workers weren’t furloughed some would be banging on front doors demanding that you respond to ACS or calling your office and driving your accounting staff crazy.

Sorta provides a vaca for their intended victims, eh?

I can hardly sympathize with people who make a living harassing others and making it difficult for energy companies to provide jobs. But politically, this is a smart move, as XRdsREV has written.

Once a bill has passed the house giving back pay for furloughed Federal workers and is passed by the Senate and signed by the President the narrative starts looking like this:

How can you give furloughed Federal workers back pay when you won't fund the NIH so that children with cancer can get treated? Isn't the whole point of health care to provide medical treatment for all Americans? So how do you justify giving money to healthy Federal workers and then turn around and let sick children die?

How can you provide back pay for furloughed Federal workers and but you won't fund the Reserves and National Guard?

How can you provide back pay for furloughed Federal workers but you won't provide funding for sick veterans? Isn't the point of health care to provide treatment for sick people? Why are healthy furloughed Federal workers more important than sick veterans?

Kind of a conundrum isn't it? If the Senate doesn't pass the bill it is going to piss off the furloughed Federal workers and their unions.

If the Senate passes it and Obama vetoes it, it is going to piss off the furloughed Federal workers and their unions.

If the Senate passes it, and Obama signs it, then the whole facade of no negotiations fades away. It opens the door just a little, but just enough to get leverage to pry it wide open. And ultimately, it might be the end of Obamacare.

What is stopping me from applying to FedGov? You’ve got to be kidding. I’ve worked with government people in the DOE. Once was enough in my career. I could never work in a lazy, no-account organization where a significant fraction of the workers are called “non-essential.” You won’t find ONE person in my company with that label. I wouldn’t last a week in FedGov. I have my pride.

Not only do they get paid for both, but they get a free vacation, as furloughed days do not count against official leave.

As usual, the “government shutdown” provides paid vacation for government “workers” and nothing for the millions of private sector people who have lost their jobs or had hours cut to less than 30 / wk in order to avoid the Mengelecare mandates.

Congratulations, congress, you sick pieces of sh**.

Question.
Do their accrued leave time accounts get charged?
Or do they get regular hours pay?
