VIDEO: Leukemia patient dropped from health insurance because of new health care regulations

An Arizona man with an incurable form of leukemia has received notice from his insurance company that his plan is being terminated due to regulations from the “Affordable Care Act.”

-snip

Back in 2006, he found out he had an incurable form of leukemia that requires ongoing treatment until he dies.

In 2012, his treatment bill was more than $350,000. But because of his insurance, his out-of-pocket was only $4,500.

That’s about to change because Michael just got a letter from his insurance carrier saying as of January 1, he would be dropped from coverage because of new regulations under Obamacare. His doctor at the Mayo Clinic may be gone as well.

"Now it doesn’t mean I can’t go see my current doctor, but my $4,500 out-of-pocket, is going to turn into a minimum of $26,000 out-of-pocket to see the doctor that I’ve been seeing the last seven years," he said.

And they *said* people with pre-existing conditions need not worry.
Yes another lie.

Pre existing is only an issue if you do not have current Health Insurance Coverage.

I have been paying for my own Healthcare since I got my first “real” Job at age 18. At age 52, I was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. The only problem with CLL, outside of it being incurable, is that it is usually considered an Old People’s disease.

I have made a point of always having Health Insurance, even when I was a young man who really didn’t “need” it. They used to call that Personal Responsibility.

With the advent of Obamacare, it’s called being a Sucker. Now the Suckers who Voted for Obama will reap what they sowed. Of course, the rest of us will suffer as well for their stupidity.

Sounds like the out-of-pocket charges are the real crime in this story.

Since he’s got to switch, might be better for him to pick a platinum or gold plan under obamacare which would give him much lower out-of-pocket expenses. Premiums would be higher for those plans, but most likely not $20K.

Just my thoughts, but maybe I’ve missed something.

Insurance companies have to “sell” insurance to people with pre-existing conditions. But the law doesn’t say how much they can charge. It’s the same with having a 25 year old kid living with you. You can put him on your policy. If you can afford the premium.

And people are just now learning about the high deductibles. I still say there is no way the people who wrote this law is that stupid. This was planned to fail. Or, as another freeper said, they never expected the SC to rule it constitutional. Then the democrats could run on replacing the conservatives on the court.

His insurance covered his cancer but probably did not have pregnancy and birth control coverage so could no longer be sold.
