Chris Matthews appeared on “The Colbert Report” Wednesday night to promote his new book, “Tip and the Gipper,” saying that it’s going to be hard for President Obama to beat Ronald Reagan’s legacy.

“Do you think Reagan was a better president than Obama is?” Stephen Colbert asked the MSNBC host.

“In the end, yes,” Mr. Matthews responded. “In the end. Because he ended the Cold War.

“That’s hard to beat,” he said, adding that he believes the government shutdown “is going to go on weeks.”

The pundit also took a jab at Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly. Mr. Colbert asked Mr. Matthews why he didn’t name his book “Killing Tip and the Gipper, referencing O’Reilly’s books “Killing Lincoln,” “Killing Kennedy” and “Killing Jesus.”

So were Warren G. Harding, James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson and Franklin Pierce. What's your point?

Actually, Harding was an excellent President. He’s been viciously maligned by leftist historians. He resolved the Wilson Depression very quickly by cutting spending and taxes and it was Calvin Coolidge who continued the model. I’d swap Zero for Harding in a heartbeat.

Well, that must have cost him a place or two in the society of liberal Democrats! Being truthful is NOT the way to get in with that crowd.

Does this mean the tingle has gone from his legs whenever he hears the name Obama? How sad. They made such a cute couple.

Actually, I'd swap Zero for any of the past Presidents, including that old communist FDR. At least they were all Americans.

And don't forget it Chris...

President Ronald Reagan and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Modern era conservative heroes. We'll not soon see their like again.

Compared to today’s Democrats, FDR wasn’t that bad. Reagan admired him. FDR believed in opportunity rather than welfare, and I believe was against public unions.

Compare Harry Truman with the Obamanation. Had the guts to A-bomb the Japanese and save lives on both sides, and when the deed was done there wasn’t anybody who doubted the nips had been nuked.

I am just surprised that Matthews of all people would ever admit to this. The Obama team is coming apart.

Obumbo and his followers can not be compared to the past presidents. Today, they are Marxist/Leninist thugs.
America has never been in such trouble as today.

Wow, that IS impressive.

Especially when you consider neither President (or any President for that matter) has the Constitutional Power to do so.

Chris Matthews KNEW Obama would be a terrible president even before he was elected.

For those that might not know, Chris Matthews was Tip O’Neill’s chief of staff. Chrissy has very good reason to give a high dose of respect to Reagan. Also, that’s Chrissy’s perspective in writing a book about the two.
