Barcodes were just beginning to be used in grocery stores around 1980-81. Remember the crap the 'tards put out on GHWB when it was discovered he was unfamiliar with supermarket checkout technology.
I am a Columbia alumnus ‘96. My student ID did not contain a bar code. Regrettably, it probably is a fake.

On a related topic, does anyone remember how we all used our SSNs as our student IDs back then? I can’t tell you how many textbooks I’ve had to tear a page out because I put my student ID in it. :-( A simpler time - the early 80’s.

Yes, bar codes were around at the time, but they were not used for student ID cards.
Bar code expansion came into use for ancillary purposes such as inventory control, library book checkout, etc., around 1990 or so as the 1980 supermarket bar code readers were expensive and bulky.

If you go down that road, you need to be much better at creating frauds than whoever did this one. If the fraud can be exposed in 5 minutes googling pictures of Obama, then it is only going to result in blowback.
In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these poorly made frauds were done by the left just to make us look bad when they are exposed.

I was a student at Western Michigan University in 1977. My ID had a bar code.
The bar code, looks to be "code 39," is not readable because the left end is cut off.
