Bar Codes date back further than you think (the 1940s) in industrial applications, and were in regular commercial use by the late 70s once the Universal Product Codes were agreed on.
Columbia could well have had bar codes on their student IDs by then, but I don't know if they really did.
According to Wiki a bar code type of system was used on trains in the 60s and they first appeared on packs of Wrigley’s gum in 1974 and they really took off from there.

I have no idea if they did. But thought a poster here debunked the picture saying that bar codes were not used on student ID’s at that time.
OK, I never said it was authentic, but was stating that bar codes were in use much earlier. They came into their own in the 1970’s. I know, I spent 35 years in the wholesale distribution industry.
Now, I have no problem with people who are knowledgeable about what bar code method and when they used it at Columbia.

Based on my college ID it would not have had a bar code but his SS# would be front and center.

Great if it was, but my guess is that something completely different than what most anyone has thought of, will bring Obama down, or at least out him for who he is. [Hint: the heavens are Mighty powerful; keep praying.]
