It’s tough for Eleanor Cox to talk about how heartbroken her daughter Erin is over the punishment she received for doing what she thought was right.
“She’s very fragile and I’m worried about her. Very worried about her. She didn’t do anything wrong,” Cox told WBZ-TV on Sunday.
Two weeks ago, Erin received a call from a friend at a party who was too drunk to drive. Erin drove to Boxford after work to pick up her friend. Moments after she arrived, the cops arrived too and busted several kids for underage possession of alcohol.
A North Andover High School honor student, Erin was cleared by police, who agreed she had not been drinking and was not in possession of alcohol. But Andover High told Erin she was in violation of the district’s zero tolerance policy against alcohol and drug use. In the middle of her senior year, Erin was demoted from captain of the volleyball team and told she would be suspended from playing for five games.

Neither the school district nor its attorney could be reached for comment Sunday, but the Cox family is hoping they’ll listen to the host of supporters who’ve stood behind Erin.
“She didn’t do anything wrong. She did what she thought was right, and I’m very proud of her,” Erin’s mother said.

Five young people in their late teens and young 20s were killed in a car near my home about two weeks ago — the driver was bragging at a party “I’m drunker than anyone here yet I can still drive!” — and told the kids to “pile in!”
Five young people paid with their lives when the IDIOT DRUNK driver hit a bridge abutment on the offramp and the car burst into flames. Someone had to go tell each of their mothers that their son or daughter was DEAD.
And, of course, they should have NEVER gotten into a car with someone boasting that he was the “drunkest one there!”
The sirens and helicopters woke us up because there were so many that responded - every dog in the neighborhood was barking, howling, etc., for hours it seemed. We didn’t know what was going on (4 AM in the morning) — we were soon to find out when my 19-year old received a text from one of his friends a few hours later.
One survivor, who reeked of alcohol according to the cops, managed to crawl out of the car before it exploded into flames. Memorial is unbelievable, piled with flowers, photos and candles. I pass it every day on my way home from work. Sad Sad SAD.
As the mother of a 19 and 22 year old I can’t imagine the grief and pain these families are experiencing.
Hope this school is sued and pays a high price for what they’ve done to this responsible teenager.
“A zero tolerance policy on drugs and alcohol for its students”... while on school property and while on school sponsored events is fine but the school dictating what student can and can not do on their own time is over the limit. FYI, I don’t drink or do drugs and have very little tolerance of those who do but I have even less tolerance for nanny state schools. You earn a diploma for the 3 Rs, not for character.
If my kid was given a ride home because she was drunk, I would thank the friend for getting her home safely and discipline my kid for underage drinking. Unless the drinking was at a school function or on school property, the incident does not concern the school. The onus for my child's behavior is on me, not them.
Then we could use the same argument against the taxi driver as some here are using against the girl........

By the way the school is applying “Zero Tolerance” then my kid would be in violation if she’s sitting in our house while I drink a beer.
And it appears you’re all OK with “Zero Tolerance”.
Sorry, I was too busy working during the 60's to get involved with the feel-good crowd. Never used drugs either (even pot).
But I believe parents have rights and kids have rights and what happens outside of school is none of the school's business.
Oh, the schools could teach the kids NOT to use drugs or alcohol but since that is a "value judgement" they are not permitted to do so.
We should raise our kids to pump out babies every 9 months to counter the Muslim and illegal invasion?
I'll vouch for you, I never saw him at any of my parties either........but then again, he was never invited because we knew he would run and tattle on us.

The school’s policy is probably that she should not be in attendance at these illegal parties. She was and she didn’t need to be.
She wasn't attending the party. She was picking up her friend. Read the article.

I wouldn't be too worried. We're not talking Boston or Cambridge. Boxford and North Andover are both leafy, affluent suburbs. Both went for Romney last November.
She was at work when her friend called. According to this article from last August, she works at the Andover Inn, which is right next to GWB and GHWB's prep school, Phillips Academy.
And CBS, you need to learn to count. I got to figure, 7-8 weeks into a 37 week school year. (The Massachusetts D.O.E. requires that school calendars show a scheduled 185 day school year.) Then again 'journalists' are probably worse than bureaucrats at dividing and figuring ...

You've just been awarded the most asinine post of the day. Not only were you head hall monitor but you stayed after after school polishing the principal's board of education. Yes, if you cared one wit about your spouse, children and family, you would pick them up each and every time they called. Heck, even if you didn't care about them but cared about your wallet, reputation, future law suits, and knowing your lack of action killed someone, you'd pick them up. Yeah, that family your spouse killed is nothing compared to your sense of high and mightiness. Hope you can sleep at night and that the jury members will praise you for not going out of your way to prevent the tragedy.
We are still friends. He doesn't drink any more and he's thanked me more than once for doing what I did.
but then again, he MIGHT know the passenger was under age right?
So why not just take him to the PD just to be safe? God knows we need more good samaritans in this world.......

When my husband got home from work, I told him about this thread and we both essentially said just what you said. We discussed it from both sides -- parents of the drinking kid, parents of the driving kid. You sum it up perfectly: The onus for my child's behavior is on me, not them.
I should add, my husband has a lot of alcoholism in his family and NEVER drank at all in HS or college.
