While I do understand your frustration because I have felt the pinch myself, the metric system has been actively and voluntarily used in the scientific community for decades, by the American military since before WWII and in some American sporting events since the 1960s.

Yes,it is sad when there is loss of life. I can see Bohol from my beach. It is not far from here.

Alex, you probably know this already, but aftershocks are earthquakes. An aftershock is no less an earthquake than a primary quake and often does as much damage. The seismic waves from the primary earthquake in the 1994 Northridge earthquake triggered a devastating earthquake 15 miles South and East of the epicenter on a fault line no one knew existed prior to that day. Yet because it followed the first quake, it was labeled an aftershock.

Stay safe and stay away from tall buildings and power lines as much as you possibly can for the next several days.

MANILA (3rd UPDATE) – A magnitude 7.2 quake hit Bohol on Tuesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said the quake occurred 2 kilometers southeast of Carmen town at 8:12 a.m.

Four people were initially reported dead in Cebu City, according to Office of Civil Defense Region 7 Director Minda Morante.

Morante said the four people died after a structure collapsed in Pasil Fish Port at the height of the quake.

Phivolcs said the following quake intensities were felt:

Intensity VII - Tagbilaran, Bohol
Intensity VI - Hinigaran, Negros Occidental
Intensity V - Iloilo City; La Carlota, Negros Occidental
Intensity IV - Masbate City; Roxas City; San Jose, Culasi, Antique; Guihulngan, Negros Oriental
Intensity III - Davao City

The quake, which was tectonic in origin, struck at a depth of about 33 km, Phivolcs said. The USGS also measured the magnitude of the quake at 7.2 but said the quake had a depth of 56.8 kms.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii, meanwhile, said there was no threat of a Pacific-wide tsunami after the quake.

Phivolcs said damage and aftershocks are expected from the quake.

Radio DYAB reporter June Perez, who is based in Cebu City, said the quake was felt in the city for about 30 seconds.

I understand all that, but using metric as a numeric language when communicating to the broad American public is guaranteed to inflict blanks of non-comprehension on most recipients.

I honestly appreciate it when I'm watching a science program and a scientist takes the care to speak to his American audience in units of measure they instantly recognize. Being somewhat of a junkie for that sort of programming, I know that he's consciously going the distance to achieve simple understanding on the part of his viewers.

The ubiquitous usage of metric units of measure in the common dialog is a pet peeve of mine. For me, it's just another invalidation and rejection of my American culture by the same forces that don't like my language or my heritage on this continent.

They're forcing me to be illiterate and innumerate in my own country.

Good to hear, Alex. I just posted the list of earthquakes prior to and following the 7.1 Mag earthquake. Those aftershocks have been small. Here's a hope that any more earthquakes connected to the 7.1 earthquake are also that small.

While it would not be out of the ordinary for a large, or even a major aftershock to occur, the further distance in time from the major primary earthquake, there is a drop in the percentage likelihood that a major or even larger aftershock would occur.
