Boehner Statement on Bipartisan Senate Agreement to Reopen Government, Avoid Default
Speaker of the House of Representatives ^ | Wednesday, October 16, 2013 | John Boehner

Posted on 10/16/2013 12:35:14 PM PDT by kristinn

WASHINGTON, DC – House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) released the following statement regarding the bipartisan Senate agreement to reopen the federal government and avoid a national default:

“The House has fought with everything it has to convince the president of the United States to engage in bipartisan negotiations aimed at addressing our country's debt and providing fairness for the American people under ObamaCare. That fight will continue. But blocking the bipartisan agreement reached today by the members of the Senate will not be a tactic for us. In addition to the risk of default, doing so would open the door for the Democratic majority in Washington to raise taxes again on the American people and undo the spending caps in the 2011 Budget Control Act without replacing them with better spending cuts. With our nation's economy still struggling under years of the president's policies, raising taxes is not a viable option. Our drive to stop the train wreck that is the president's health care law will continue. We will rely on aggressive oversight that highlights the law's massive flaws and smart, targeted strikes that split the legislative coalition the president has relied upon to force his health care law on the American people.”

Evidently, Boehner is saying behind the scenes that Cruz was on a fool's errand.

I guess standing up for the people is a Fool's errand.
Boehner could stop this in the same way Reid has stopped all the votes in the Senate. He doesn't have to put it to a vote.

I'm tired of this dog and pony show. If Boehner would have held to the Hastert rule, we wouldn't have a vote. The press knew that he would cave.

A RINO retreat (one of several) a “master stroke”? Hasn’t proved so thus far.

Unfortunately, it’s the best that could be expected given the current makeup of Congress. But they held on for 16 days before they caved. And the Rats showed themselves vindictive by Barrycading open air monuments, preventing priests from saying mass for the Armed Forces, etc. Though not widely reported on the MSM, the social media reported enough to get any reasonably informed person information on what was happening.

These are magnificent points! I new there was a silver lining. Now we are going to win the 2014 elections for sure. 2016 is a shoe-in and then we'll control all of Congress and the Executive Branch! Then we'll be able to make real changes in this country. We'll do away with Obamacare (which will be the only health insurance available and leave all without coverage) altogether. We'll SHRINK this overbearing and bloated government starting in 2016! We'll cut the EPA, HHS, etc. and re-build our military. Thanks to Obama shutting down our memorials, our nation will be saved! Thank you, Obama! Thank you!!!!

Really?

We will rely on aggressive oversight..."

Like you did for "Fast and Furious," the abuses at the IRS, NSA, DOJ, BENGHAZI...FUJB. Life's a b*tch when you get caught with a live boy, ain't it?

I don’t know If I’d go that far. America is still here and there are many people, good people, who just mind their business and try to live their lives. They’d rather be left alone. At some point they get pissed. At some point they rise up. And they have guns. Lots of them.

This isn’t over yet. Stinging defeat today, yes, but the war is still ongoing.

Let’s see if actually passes the hose tonight and by how much. Let’s also see how many dems vote against it. That will be an indication of how much heat they are taking from back home.

To avoid removal as Speaker, Boehner needs all the dem votes and 17 republican votes.

He can still be removed before the evening surrender vote.

John “Give Up” Boehner, the Democrat in Republican clothing.

"Evidently, Boehner is saying behind the scenes that Cruz was on a fool's errand."

Cruz needs to stand for election as Speaker.

I think Boehner is likely correct they will try to undo sequestration if they don’t take these cuts. Since sequestration has not been a big issue, we need to let that continue for now.

Honestly, we made zero progress in getting the Dems to cave, and it has been weeks.

Many Freepers seem to believe Obama would just miraculously cave after a little time. Well, that didn’t happen.

Boehner did a good job even shutting things down at all. Is he caving? Yes.

But, seriously, what did you expect to accomplish? We could do this for six months and nothing would change except the polls turning more against us. Yes, the polls show Obama is in a bad place as well, but they do blame Republicans more, and at higher levels than the start of the shutdown. If we kept it up another 3 weeks, that would have only turned against us even more.

This is a terrible outcome, to do this and get nothing. But, many predicted it is what would happen, and it did.

There is simply no way to win fighting the SIGNATURE legislation of the opposition party when you only hold one piece of the government!

Go back and demand negotiations once it’s over, but don’t threaten default. As much as people say we won’t default tomorrow, and there is plenty of money and it would be on Obama, the officials who the credit ratings agencies LISTEN TO say we will default, and we don’t want even a threat of that happening.

Sorry, but this whole tactic was doomed to fail.

Just like the Democrats picked an off-election year to dump Obamacare on us, the Republicans can afford to do aggressive and even seemingly stupid things to slow it down, change it or even stop it. WAKEUP! If people already forgot what the Democrats did to get Obamacare to this point in history, they aren’t going to remember anything that the Republicans did to stop it a year from now.

I say let’s do this again in 2-3 months. This will never end. We are broke. The one good thing Obama and the dims have done is to push all of this to the breaking point.

Just in time for primary season...sounds like a plan!

Only one thing to do...get up off the floor and keep fighting. I'm not despondent at all, and I'm looking forward to the primaries next year.

Did you really think sending Tea Party conservatives to DC was NOT going to cause the GOP-e to have a few fits?

“Default” is a lie. There is no danger of default, more than enough money comes in to make debt payments.

The rats are laughing and dancing in the streets.
The mice walked right into their traps.

So next time will there be a plan to win???, or will only the Dems be allowed one?

Republicans don’t need the democrats to remove Boehner.

All they need to do is convene quickly even electronically and count the votes they have to remove him.

I don’t think Boehner knows if has enough votes to sustain his Speakership. I think he is daring the republican caucus to move to remove him. If they don’t, Boehner will have removed any leverage they have and that means Obamacare wins totally because Boehner will never fight to defund or delay it.
