Walmart fires employee for coming to the aid of woman being assaulted by her boyfriend in the parking lot

Kristopher Oswald says he was doing the right thing when he jumped to the aid of a woman being assaulted in the parking lot of the Michigan Walmart where he worked. Walmart says he violated company policy and fired Mr Oswald the next day. The 30-year-old stock clerk in Hartland, Michigan, was punched six times in the head by the woman's furious boyfriend, but he says he never thought the incident would cost him his job. 'I never expected all of this. And the least I expected was to not have a job,' Mr Oswald told WXYZ-TV. But Walmart says corporate rules demanded that Mr Oswald not intervene in that circumstance. Mr Oswald's manager wrote he was fired 'after a violation of company policy on his lunch break.' 'We had to make a tough decision, one that e don't take lightly, and he's no longer with the company,' company spokeswoman Ashley Hardie told the Associated Press.

Mr Oswald said he was in his car on his break from his job stocking shelves about 2.30am Sunday when he saw a man grabbing a young woman. It appeared that he was trying to stop her from leaving the parking lot, Mr Oswald said. He said he asked her if she needed help and the man started punching him in the head and yelled that he was going to kill him. Mr Oswald said he was able to get on top of the man, but then two other men jumped him from behind

Livingston County sheriff's deputies arrived and halted the fight. The woman was not seriously hurt. Police investigated, but could not track down the suspect.

If you are woman shopping at Walmart and you are being attacked,Walmart employees are told to stand back watch & allow the person to beat/harm a woman. You can see how much Walmart thinks of it's customers. As the many say,one more reason not to shop at Walmart

Wouldn’t they have done the same if it had been a man being?

He should have taken the opportunity to sell her something for her wounds instead of trying to prevent them — bandaids and gauze were on sale.

Police investigated, but could not track down the suspect.

The suspect was the woman's boyfriend. She's protecting him. Dang, people are stupid.

Zero tolerance exists when there is no common sense.

Anyone who gets between a woman and the husband of boyfriend who is beating her bloody will find, more often than not, that he is being attacked by the woman as well as by the man. I have seen it work that way more than once and have done the good deed one time. Never again.

One suspects that it was inappropriate for a white man to become involved at all.

Allowing certain patrons to kill each other in the parking lot is just part of a larger Theft Prevention Program.

From the stand point of Corporate. They don't want any liability issue. Citizens can do heroic stuff on their own, just not under them.

And thus we are downgrading into UK - the daylight beheading of one of her soldiers on the street, and passersby ‘KNOW that some vague gubmint was going to take care of it’

That’s because rigidly sticking to a policy is easier and requires less thought by management than using common sense. If management uses their own judgement and reasoning then they might get flack for a decision they make. Mindlessly implementing policy from above without question (zero tolerance) means they are covering their own backside at the expense of their people. Great leadership there. :-/ We routinely see the same thing with schools and their zero tolerance policies. That’s how you get kids suspended for cartoon pictures, poptart shapes, etc. Mindless drones CYA.

there’s a documentary about Wal Mart - and the employees and former managers tell about circumstances just like these - basically, WalMart builds the roads and parking lots to get to the store - they don’t care what happens in the parking lot - staff is low in the store - but people always come in there - over buy - self-check out - and leave...once the purchase is made - Wal Mart executives don’t care...the Walton family are the most richest people in the US - maybe the world...they have a compound built for survival - it’s another company that touted US MADE - got it going - then started buying cheaper made products from China -— it’s a money maker - no a safety net!

I suspect it has more to do with the fact that in every such situation, WalMart will end up getting sued by one party or the other. You can't be certain that the whole thing wasn't a set up to begin with. Noble intentions or not, the employee endangered himself by physically intervening.
He gets killed or injured, he sues WalMart.
The bad guy sues WalMart, along with his “girlfriend”.

Want to stop this stupidity? Find a way to derail the lawsuit lottery form of welfare.

And so is every other corporation. Get over it. They exist to sell you stuff and make a profit.

I’ve heard of similar incidents, sex during lunch hour, where the company could not fire the employee. I think that involved a union.
