Satire Gone Too Far? The Onion Hurls Slurs At Redskins Owner

Publication's Take On Team Nickname Debate Raises Many Eyebrows

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A satirical publication is making real news with its take on the debate surrounding the Washington Redskins nickname.

An article posted to The Onion’s website on Monday featured anti-Semitic slurs and stereotypes aimed at Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, who is Jewish.

Under the headline, “Redskins’ K— Owner Refuses To Change Team’s Offensive Name,” The Onion referred to Snyder as “hook-nosed” and “shifty-eyed.” The K-word was used three times, once in the headline and twice again in the story — and it wasn’t the only derogatory term used.

Snyder has insisted the team will continue to be called the Redskins despite growing opposition to the name. Those calling for a change include the Oneida Indian Nation, a tribe in upstate New York.

Veteran broadcaster Bob Costas called the team’s moniker “an insult” and “a slur” during a Sunday Night Football editorial earlier this month.

Did The Onion go too far with its satire? Reaction on Twitter ranged from applause to outrage.

“The Onion makes its point by crossing the line,” one person tweeted.

Another wrote that The Onion failed “in a big, pretty disgusting, way.”

I'd hazard I a guess that I know and understand more history than most.

But to the main issue here -- I'm dog-tired of listening to people whine. Every democrat-voting demographic is offended by something that normal Americans recognize as harmless. Not a day passes without another round of whining, complaining, griping, bitching moaning from the left about perfectly harmless things.

It would not be possible, for me to care any less about their whining. I've had it.

If Mr. Snyder changes the name of his team to ANYNAME other than REDSKINS, I move that we strike all “Indian” names from use. No more states, rivers, towns, counties, lakes will be called what they are called today. NO MORE INDIAN NAMES, PERIOD!

Take that you PC Assholes. (not that I feel strongly about this matter)

I like it. It’s real, it’s funny, and it’s fun.

I just want to know what Bob Kostas (Greek?) thinks, then I’ll make a decision.

I remember an Indian baseball team in B.C.’s Chilcotin back in the ‘70s who called themselves the “Wagon-Burners”.

Natives have a great sense of humor, generally.

I thought that the indians lost the war....why do they get to make the rules?? The entire concept of “Indian Nations” within this country is asinine at best....cut off the welfare, mainline them, like everyone else, and get the hell out of the 18th century.

That’s the first clever thing PETA ever thought of. Redskins Potatoes... nice.

Since most of the tickets for Redskins’ games are sold to government employees and hangers on who are supported by taxpayers, the name should be changed to the Washington Tapeworms.

I thought a Charger was what I used to power up the battery to my phone.

Heard on Beck's show today that the Redskins organization made 97% of their political donations to the Republican Party.

I guess the Ravens got the message.

Their shoulder decorations have a jagged lightning bolt kind of design. The team nickname per wikipedia is ‘the Bolts’ or the “San Diego Super Chargers” which is the title of the fight song.

Of course superchargers are the engine powered compressors, famous for being used on aircraft engines in WWII.

I have no idea how the Baseball Indians get away with this. Makes even me cringe, a little bit

I have the same feeling, but you can't go entirely by your feelings.

I'm very sympathetic to the Irish, but this guy doesn't make me cringe:

It's just silly fun.

I wish we could go back to the old symbol for the Massachusetts Turnpike, before they removed the arrow. Possibly the greatest logo in human history...
