US Naval Base On Lockdown 'After Shots Fired' 7:17pm UK, Thursday 24 October 2013

Several people have been shot near a US Naval base in Tennessee, according to local media reports.

The Navy confirmed a shooting took place near Naval Support Activity Midsouth in Willington, north of Memphis, but has not provided additional details.

The Navy said the base had been placed on lockdown.

WHBQ-TV in Memphis reported a shooter was in custody.

Police told the station they suspect the alleged gunman was an employee relieved of duty who opened fire after returning to their vehicle.

I suppose one should learn to land on a static carrier deck before trying the heaving types.

The original story now says that the shooter was a recruiter.

A US Navy recruiter who had been relieved of duty opened fire at Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Millington, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the developments.

One should learn to fly, period. That’s what they do. Not all MIL pilot candidates start out with a pilot’s license. The MIL has to do it all.

Just spoke to my sister - my brother-in-law works there. He was home for lunch, but she didn’t have any other real information. The earlier poster mentioned the flood - very, very flat land. The Mississippi River basin. Almost Arkansas, if you know what I mean.

You need to learn how to walk before you learn how to run. Likewise I assume you would need to learn how to land on a runway before you learn how to land on a flighdeck.

Indeed.

When I was stationed at WSMR as a US Army Captain I became good friends with the CO of the USS Desert Ship, a Navy Captain billet.

I took great joy at the reaction I’d get when calling his office and saying “this is Captain ______ calling for Captain______”

The Navy tests shipborne missiles and systems such as radars at the range, among other things.

"One should learn to fly, period."

I tried Hang Gliders in the 70's.

Now that the SR-71s are retired, I'm not sure it's worth additional effort.

Downhill bike riding and skiing seem to fix the need for speed.

Yes, one of my old Captain JAG lawyers from Fort Benning, GA back in 1989 is a JAG colonel lawyer there now. Naval Air Station I believe that place is. I hope he is okay.
