A top Republican has proposed legislation that would allow all Americans to enroll in the health plan used by federal employees and members of Congress.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), who introduced the bill, said the measure would address some of the nations key healthcare challenges.
This is a free-market approach to healthcare with government playing the very limited role of helping small businesses and individuals come together to get a better price for healthcare much like larger businesses can already negotiate on their own, Issa said in a statement Thursday.
Reps. William Lacy Clay (D-Mo.) and Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.) have co-sponsored the legislation, giving the bill support from both ends of the political spectrum.
The National Journal listed Clay as tied for first among the most-liberal House members in its 2012 vote ratings. Issa and Mulvaney rank among the top one-third for most-conservative lawmakers.
Federal worker labor groups criticized the health measure on Thursday. American Federation of Government Employees president J. David Cox suggested that the bill is unnecessary, saying the federal-worker plan is similar to the insurance exchange established under President Obamas signature health-care legislation. . .

Isn’t Issa too busy working on amnesty to work on this?
Issa’s attempt to distract attention from his Amnesty Bill that he’s introducing in the House next week.
That would make it a ‘single payer’ plan.
One plan for everybody.
One provider.
Well played, you bastard. Well played
WIth “Republicans” like this, who needs Democrats?
Rep. Issa has apparently imbibed the DC Kool-Ade and is now working for the other side (the dark side).
Beware the Ides of March, or in this case, the Issas of November.
Leni
I’m not sure your assessment is correct.
Then again, it won’t ever pass the Senate or get signed by Obama...it may be a clever way to bring attention back to special privledges for Capitol Hill.....
Let’s let it play out......
Quite correct. Let the Dems tell what is wrong with this idea.
Does that include the 72% federal subsidy supplied by the taxpayers to cover the costs?
All we heard about just a few days ago was about how the 'Republicans blew it big time' by "shutting down the government to stop 0bamacare". Well, it looks like 0bamacare should've been stopped or delayed after all but do we hear the media talking about Ted Cruz's vindication over his 21 hour filibuster BECAUSE OF 0bamacare? HELL NO.
Can’t we just get this idiot to start investigating himself and STFU?
As far as this health care idea. We need to focus, not suggest another forced government plan. Delay Obamacare, drop the mandate, have an non-mandated catastrophic policy for which the consumer chooses the deductible.
Go to Hell, Issa.
The current illegals situation is defacto amnesty already.
The illegals currently can get jobs, medical treatments, food stamps, maternity care, welfare, on and on. They are ALREADY a huge burden on schools and get in-state tuition in colleges.
AND THEY CAN VOTE BY MAIL IN MY STATE, NO ID REQUIRED.
Yeah.....Legal amnesty won’tchange anything I WILL NOTICE.
I doubt there would be many takers without the subsidies, which amount to about 12K a year. These are Cadillac plans as defined by Obamacare and can be taxed. Obama gave the FEHBP a wavier from this tax--at least for the next few years.
issa waste of time, the latest chosen water bearer of the GOPe (i guess ryan, cantor and boehner decided to run a new rep leftist out there to spread their pain around) decides to fly all his true blue leftist colors.
yeah says issa, let’s just all have gov’t run and subsidized insurance (aka single payer and eventually substandard healthcare) and BTW, let’s give it away to all illegal locusts sucking our nation dry through amnesty.
What do Republicans not understand about the Fed. Gov. not being involved in health care?
If the labor union leaders are against this, it could be a good thing to point out the hypocrisy of unions. How dare the common people ask for as good benefits!
This proposal is just to provide him with cover as he pushes his amnesty bill.
What about Benghazi? Get busy on that Issa. It’s over a year ago. Get your ass in gear.
Then there’s F&F, AP, IRS, Seal Team 6.
