Jon Stewart Isn’t “President Obama’s Biggest Problem” ('Jon Stewart Is Way Too Conservative')

Washington Post political blogger Chris Cillizza has discovered President Barack Obama’s “biggest problem.” It is “fanatical Republican opposition to his agenda and a money-captured political system that gives a minority party a great deal of power to act on that opposition.” Haha just kidding, no, it’s not that, it’s “Jon Stewart.” You know, the funny cable show talking guy. The one who does the jokes that you like.

What makes Stewart a problem is that he has been strongly criticizing/making funny jokes about the Obama administration’s major healthcare #fail this week. Cillizza explains: “Stewart dedicated the entire first 10 minutes of his show — three full segments — on Monday to slashing hits on the website and the president’s handling of the problems.” That’s right, “the entire first 10 minutes.” Plus: “He compared Obama to ‘Gil,’ the hapless salesman from ‘The Simpsons.’” Gil! That could cost Obama Ohio!

This is why it matters, according to Cillizza:

According to a 2012 Pew Research Center poll, “The Daily Show” has the second-largest share of young viewers — aged 18-29 — of any of the 24 media outlets tested.

That is indeed true, though “media outlets” should say “news sources.” (The source with the oldest audience: “Hannity.”) The Pew Report, though, does not say that “The Daily Show” is the exclusive source of news for more than a small subset of those young viewers. According to the same survey, nearly a third of the New York Times’ readers are 18-29. Here’s another fact: “The Daily Show” averages 1 million to 2 million viewers per night. That is a small fraction of the population. It is a small fraction of the young population. And those 1 to 2 million viewers per night are mostly pretty liberal, and will remain pretty liberal.

“Only if mommy and daddy want to keep adult kiddo on their policy and believe an adult kiddo up to age 26 should still be supported by mommy and daddy.”

Sounds like just one more thing Obama will have to decree to make an adjustment to this mess.

My lib snowbird neighbor told me last year she gets her NEWS from Jon Stewart...I was puzzled why she would get her news from a comedian. She returned this week and I could not wait to hear what she thought about Stewart beginning to make fun of Obama lately...she informed me she is taking a break from news/politics. BTW according to the article Stewart’s fan base is young, my neighbor is in her late 50s...

Jon Stewarts show is like those 30-minute evening news blurbs, IMO, with some comedy and commentary thrown in. Like the serious blurbs, it is simply not enough time to get a full dose of information, should you want to get your news from TV.

It is sick however; Jon Leibowitz is more critical and accurate of the Obama administration than the so-called real news organizations of the drive by media. This is the state of our rotten culture these days and it is as revolting as the media’s pushing of homoerotic behavior; etc.

Your neighbor is not alone. There is a whole section of America that gets its "news" from the Daily Show and Colbert Report. They really believe it's news. And then they go vote.

It's really quite ingenious. Stewart and Colbert can tell outrageous lies and, when called on it, say "awww...we're just a comedy show!" But to many of their low information viewers, they ARE "the news."

As they say, only government could screw something up this poorly."

Well, perhaps the silver lining is they'll screw up the death panels, too and not kill us.
