‘Riots always begin typically the same way’: food stamp shutdown looms Friday

Food stamp recipients face a massive benefit cut set to kick in when stimulus funds expire Friday. The nationwide cut “is equivalent to about 16 meals a month for a family of three,” according to a Center on Budget and Policy Priorities analysis using the USDA’s “Thrifty Food Plan.” CBPP called the roughly $5 billion annual cut to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program “unprecedented” in “depth and breadth.”

“If you look across the world, riots always begin typically the same way: when people cannot afford to eat food,” Margarette Purvis, the president and CEO of the Food Bank for New York City, told Salon Monday. Purvis said that the looming cut would mean about 76 million meals “that will no longer be on the plates of the poorest families” in NYC alone – a figure that outstrips the total number of meals distributed each year by the Food Bank for New York City, the largest food bank in the country. “There will be an immediate impact,” she said.

“The fact that they’re going to lose what’s basically an entire week’s worth food” each month, said Purvis, “it’s pretty daunting.” She told Salon that while policymakers “are attempting to punish people for being poor,” and “people are comforted by believing that they know that a person has to have done something wrong in order to be poor,” in reality, “I can tell you that more and more folks have more than one job and are still needing help.”(continued)

They might have to get frozen fish sticks instead of lobster. Yeah, there will be blood in the streets.

Many of those on welfare and/or on food stamps are probably too lazy to riot.

“...you can have pancakes or oatmeal for breakfast, PB&J or grilled cheese and soup for lunch, beans, rice or potatoes for dinner with meat loaf, lots of pasta dishes with meatballs or chicken. They need to start hitting the dollar stores, clip coupons and actually cook.”

That’s part of the problem. High calorie diets for people who aren’t working creates obesity. They should be limited to fruits and vegetables.

Beats me.

I’ve never used them so don’t know how they work.

However, there are women I recognize from WalMart groceries buying ‘discounted’ but [still very expensive] handbags, clothes and shoes at Marshalls.

They load it all into their Lexus and drive the 1/4 mile to the Section 8 [former McMansion] development right behind the Wally strip mall.

I have no idea how much they get but it’s apparently not a pittance.

I am in the top 10% and I still eat ramen.

We're probably higher than that, but here in the Philadelphia area, if you're not getting any government subsidies, you're downright middle class up to about $150k. Anyway, we don't eat Ramen because it's too much sodium for us, but we do eat lots of eggs and peanut butter because that's what we can afford. My wife and I went to BJ's yesterday and I was looking in our cart and realizing that we've traded down on so many things - even our bread is BJ's brand.

The down side is that this money is causing food inflation

I don't know if that's true. On the one hand it makes sense - people have more money to spend, so the manufacturers can charge more. And you do see that - WIC eligible products are often the highest prices on the shelf. However, the only people in the store not using coupons are the people paying with EBT cards. That has to keep the cost of my food down somewhere along the line - I figure if the manufacturer can get full cost from the EBT folk, they can afford to give a discount to the rest of us.

Walmart gets about 40+% of the EBT food dollar. You see the leeches there more than anywhere else. You WON’T usually see them there before 11AM. Getting up that early upsets them.

Riots always begin typically the same way

Not suggesting people riot, you know, just suggesting that riots should, I mean could, happen if y'all cut our free stuff.

Riots are great, since we get free food just like gummint programs. They're even better since we get free TVs! /s

I see these ‘ladies’ at Walmart swipe that EBT card around like it was a Black Amex card....

Here in Georgia, the going rate for SNAP is $134 PER PERSON PER MONTH. It is likely yours is a PER PERSON RATE too.

In many cases, the fact that one ‘qualifies’ for one program is automatic qualification for other benefits.

The fraud and needlessness of these programs are patently egregious.

I like ramen! My favorite is chicken. I always drain the juice off into a big coffee cup and have it separate. Makes for a tasty cup off soup.

I would like to see a real journalist interview some poor food stamp recipient this Friday, get their opinion on how “the man is dissin ‘em”, then follow them to Walmart on black Friday to see how much they spend on Christmas. It’s furr the chirrun.

I am. I had neighbors who had to go on food stamps temporarily years and years ago. They were so embarrassed that they shopped at off hours so no one would see them.

My oldest grand daughter loves to cook! About 9 years old. She loves to cook up stuff in the kitchen with grandma.

She is starting a youngster cooking class this week.

I can’t stand looking at Mario, literally. He reminds me of Mr. Creosote in that Monty Python movie that blew up.

Artie,Many souls need this help. There is wide speard abuse but for the souls that need it I feel sorry for them. There are food banks in the local areas that can help with staples and people should check them out. They do have meat available one day a week and all you have to do is sign in.You should get there early because they do run out of things.

My house hold cash has went down $500 in one year, because of increased property taxes to fund a projects around town and to replace a perfectly good senior center. Maybe I should riot too. $500 comes to just over $40 a month.
This doesn’t count that the property tax on my house went up nearly 22% in the last 4 years.
