East Libya declares self-government

Eastern Libya has declared an autonomous regional government with an official ceremony, challenging the country's weak central government that failed to assume unifying power over rebels and various tribes since the 2011 war toppled Muammar Gaddafi.

Leaders of an autonomy movement met on Sunday in the small town of Ajdabiya to launch the government under the name of Barqa, or Cyrenaica as it is also known, supporters said.

A pro-federalist television station showed more than 20 ministers taking the oath at a podium decorated with a Cyrenaica flag.

They were joined by the tribal leader Ibrahim Jathran, the former head of Libya's Petroleum Protection Force in charge of guarding oil facilities, who defected in the summer and seized the biggest ports Ras Lanuf and Es-Sider with his troops.

Jathran was standing next to the self-declared Prime Minister Abd-Rabbo al-Barassi, a defected air force commander.

Muzzies occupied fighting tribal wars amongst themselves is not necessarily a bad thing. Yeah, they can serve as hosts to terrorist groups. But it isn’t like strong centralized Arab governments can’t and don’t do the same thing.

A map of the area concerned would be of help along with a still (pix) of the event if possible. Perhaps some background by others (FRs) could fill us in on whats going on there.

Map of the three Governorates of Libya based on the borders of today's governorates. After independence in 1951, until 1963, Libya was divided into three governorates (muhafazat): Cyrenaica, Tripolitania, and Fezzan.

Looks like an invitation for the Egyptians to cross the border to suppress the rebellion.

Interesting thought. Egypt has a half million men in arms and 1 million reserves; Libya only has a population of 4.5 million. Lots of oil in Eastern Libya.

This looks like the group that will prevail — they’ll have the rest of the “country” back under their control if they want it. Most of the oil is there, so whatever the nature of this new regime, it’ll get the backing of You-Rope.

Sisi won’t commit any troops to such a project until he’s got the jihadists in Egypt rounded up or dead. Go, Sisi!

yes, Benghazi is in the east. Remember that Libya has always been a tribal state, from way before Arabian tribes settled there en-masse in the 10th century. Now they are a Berber-Arab mix (with traces of Germanic, Italic, Phoenician, Greek etc. blood) but their allegiance is first to clan, then tribe, then, distantly state.
