MANSFIELD, Ohio — Local authorities in Mansfield were tracking a pack of coyotes Friday after a man doing some lawn care was attacked.

He was riding a mower while blowing leaves along Springmill Road shortly before noon.

According to the Mansfield Police Department, about four coyotes rushed at him from a wooded area and one jumped up on the mower, scratching him.

The man’s jacket was torn and he suffered an injury to his arm but was able to drive himself to the hospital.

Coyotes are a small type of wolf: their proper biological name is “the lesser prairie wolf”. We had problems with a pair hunting in tandem that almost moved me to buy a crossbow with a laser sight — the only thing with sufficient lethality that wouldn’t run afoul of no-discharge-of-firearms ordinances where I live. They moved to other hunting grounds before I bought it.

Did he use the riding mower to get there?

Are the coyotes on the payroll of the EPA?

The photo looks like the ones I’ve seen here in SE lower Michigan. They are not afraid of much.

Just reintroduce wolves. That will help.

Not trying to dogpile on you (pardon the pun), but even a 40 lb. yote is a handful and can inflict some serious damage. Plus you get to go through a series of rabies shots to boot. Rethink.

Different animals employ different survival strategies. Coyotes hunt in packs and are opportunists. It would be more likely that you would be attacked by a pack rather than a single coyote. That is a slightly different scenario. Coyotes killed my neighbors two pit bulls.

The article had a place to click on to find out what to do if you find a coyote in your back yard, I already know what to do.

You have to be quite a wimp to be unable to defend yourself from a coyote.

If you are un armed, the 'yote has the edge. Those critters are quick and very athletic.

my bet is against the critters being coyotes...

I agree. Coyotes attack small vulnerable things, but a man on a lawnmower? Not unless he was near their den or something.

Rabies isn't all that common in OH. That might explain irrational attacks, if there were rabies. It's a mild autumn in OH. I can't imagine finding food or shelter is a problem.

It's an odd story.

Get a dying rabbit call for less than $10 at a sporting goods store and pick a good shooting position. They`ll sometimes come close enough to hit with a rock.

Caution, a dying rabbit call pulls in every other predator too, black bear, cougar, wild dogs (a big problem in some places) so be ready for the unexpected.

It said “pack.” That is not “A” coyote. What sort of weapon would he have on a lawn mower anyway?

After this? I would guess a high capacity pump shotgun, for that up close and personal protection.

Mowing is an activity where I have avoided carrying, I don’t want the sweat and grit in the gun. Might have to reconsider.

I wear coveralls so a holster isn't an option for me. I carry in pocket with it wrapped up in a thick wipe down rag. Actually that's how I carry every where. I fold it so it covers the grips but I can access it in a second. It draws zero attention. :>}

You have Ratty’s? We have one. Love him. He’s quite a bold little critter. Maybe a little too much, so. He’s really good at keeping the rodent count low, so we don’t need the coyotes to protect the garden as much any more.

Yea we have two. One is a full size which comes from Beagle and a Toy which comes from a Chihuahua. Guess which one is the Boss? LOL. If the Toy was a Doberman I'd be dead. They're great dogs really good around kids and excellent watch dogs. I'm hard of hearing so the toy wakes me up if someone is in the driveway or on the porch. She also wakes me up for text messages etc LOL. She's my wife's companion. The big Ratty can't make the jump up to her lap when she's in the wheelchair but the small one can.
