An estimated 6,400 barrels of yellowcake uranium were discovered near the Muammar Gaddafi stronghold of Sabha towards the end of the uprising that resulted in the rulers death in October 2011.
The UNs International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has performed an inventory of the stock which is kept in an ordinary warehouse, next to an estimated 4,000 surface-to-air missiles previously procured from Russia and technically maintains control over it.
Yet a report from a visiting journalist in the UKs Times newspaper last month alleged that the stockpile was in the control of a local weapons dealer, and his men did not even guard the warehouse for fear of suffering radiation poisoning.
"We have no use for the yellow uranium ourselves and are frightened of it," said Bharuddin Midhoun Arifi, a commander of 2000 fighters in Sabha. "My men don't like guarding the site as they believe it will make their skin fall off. So we guard it from a nearby checkpoint. Maybe someone could steal one or two drums if they wanted, but not more."
According to the militia commander, the security vacuum left following the death of Colonel Gaddafi is now attracting Al-Qaeda, which is seeking weapons.
"Qa'ida come to visit me, asking to buy weapons, asking for heat-seeking missiles, asking for uranium," Arifi said. "It started this year when the French sent troops to chase them out of Mali. Qa'ida came to Sabha asking for medical supplies. They received some. Next they came back asking for weapons" including surface-to-air missiles capable of shooting down a passenger liner.

Ping.
Not directly related to Benghazi but it sure as heck smells the same.
There's no yellow cake. Someone told him over tea so he's certain.
Where did they get it?
EBay? Gaddaffi financed a lot of revolts in Subsahara Africa and made a lot of friends. He could have gotten it from a dozen countries.
Implore? I always found that term amusing. It has such a gutless sound to it. Then imploring the UN to do anything takes ‘gutless’ to another level
It’s UN speak. Russia is reminding the UN publically that the yellow cake the UN is legally responsible is controlled by a local malitia that trades with Al Qaeda. When the SHTF Russia will pull this card back out of the deck.
They’ve already closed their embassy in Libya after an attack on it related to some shenanigans involving a female Russian staffer and a Libyan air force officer.
Somethings up that has Russians concerned

area includes Bengahzi. Nothings being reported in US media Eljazzy reported this with apparently live coverage.
0bama bombs Libya into rubble and leaves the mess for someone else to clean up. Like 0bamaCare.

MAybe I’m being cynical but the more chaos in Libya he higher oil prices go. Russia is the largest oil producer in the world.
I can’t type and I don’t proofread. Bad combination.
That would be Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame's non existent yellow cake that Scooter Libby went to prison for.
After Khadafi opened up his nuclear program to the US and Brits they found that had a large stockpile of yellowcake uranium.
Half of it had been smuggled in from Niger, and after some years declared to IAEA.
The other half he had subsequently smuggled in from Niger and never declared it until his “surrender”.
I only mention that because a number of years back we had people swearing that the very notion of uranium being smuggled out of Niger was preposterous.
75% of France's electricity comes from nuclear power which might help explain their interest in stopping Al Qaeda in Mali and sending more troops to Central African Republic. Lots of uranium in those countries.
I kind of believe it is more of the WMD that Hussein hid when we went into Iraq.
How about Polonium?
Thanks Pan_Yan.
