Establishment Republicans, looking to push back against Tea Party conservatives they blame for undermining the GOP brand, face an early test of their clout with the grassroots in Tuesdays primary election for Alabamas 1st congressional district.
Amid a concerted effort by the Chamber of Commerce to secure a win for former state Sen. Bradley Byrne in the deep-red district, polls show his race against conservative underdog Dean Young remains a toss-up.
No one can say that one side will definitely win, and thats whats got everybody so nervous, said David Mowery, an Alabama-based Republican strategist. Byrne and Young are vying to replace ex-Rep. Jo Bonner, who resigned during the summer to take up a new position with the University of Alabama. The winner of the GOP primary is considered a shoo-in to win the Dec. 17 special election....

Anybody?

This civil war should be on 50 fronts.
If the Tea Party can’t get any traction after the Obamacare fiasco and the multitude of Obama’s lies, then there isn’t much hope.
“This civil war should be on 50 fronts.”
or 57 as per our idiot Kenyan
I didn't so I Googled "Dean Young Alabama" and only got hits for very recent articles at Slate, Huffington Post and some other lefty org. All the headlines imply a narrow-minded Tea Party bigot.
No surprise that mac daddy said 57 states, he lies about everything else.
Pinging to poster of a thread on this topic from yesterday ...
If comments at the site are an indicator, the Tea Party does not enjoy a stellar reputation on the part of the populace. Folks generally are thinking one-tooth southern drawling snake-handling pentecostal negro lynchers in dirty bib overalls when they think Tea Party. Definitely a labelling uphill battle.
I didn’t see any comments on the site. If I did I wouldn’t consider “The Hill” to be an indicator of anything but the extremist liberal talking points.
Dean Young appears to be on the extreme end of the Tea Party spectrum. Amazingly...despite having no money...he appears to be tied neck and neck with Byrne. I’m not in that district but if I was I would be voting for Byrne. IMHO Young would wind up being an embarrassment in DC.
I like him already...
Negro lynchers tended to be Democrats, at lease when I was looking at such things.
No, it is white southerners who are the lynchers. It matters not the political label.
I do not think blacks were lynched but those freeing them or publishing in favor of emancipation... that political tool is used by democratenunions.
When the Chamber of Commerce is against you these days, it means you are the conservative.
Young made waves for helping defeat a tax increase for schools and has run a few campaigns on tax matters. He played a role in Judge Roy Moore's big comeback win for the AL supreme court.
Byrne has sprint upwards of 20 times more than Young and US Chamber of Commerce has been doing month long or more robocall call campaign plus big glossy mailers.
The chamber support for Byrne shifted my vote to Young.
Try the Mobile Press Register. It is the local newspaper.
Byrne was my and I think the conservative vote here. Though he is a party switcher and not an ideal conservative by any means, Byrne fired corrupt Dims in the Junior College system.
The Dims/left cost him the GOP nomination for Gov two years back to retaliate for him daring to stand up against their corruption. They wanted to cost him this nomination for the same reasons. We need to reward people who actually stand up to Dim corruption, whether or not they are ideal candidates. [Byrne was a Clinton delegate before party switching.]
Out of curiousiy....your description of Byrne makes him sound awfully center/ left for an Alabama Republican. What was your objection to Young?
Hank
Sorry for the late reply. I was traveling when you asked me and then I have been catching up.
The one part of my Byrne description you apparently missed is that after he switched parties, in one position in higher education he rooted out corruption in the the Junior College system and some of the people he fired were corrupt African-Americans. The state teacher’s union has gone after him since and in fact backdoor paid for ads against him in the most recent primary run off for the GOP nomination for Governor. And he led in the first round and they teachers union ads probably cost him the nomination.
I thought that was a terrible thing. I thought this time Byrne had to win this time or it would scare off politicians all of the country. If you want politicians to DO THINGS in office, you must reward those who do. You can not throw them over for the next candidate you hope will be even better.
