The "88" thing is especially nonsensical, since eight is a lucky number in Asia and just about every product or business category has some entities with "88" in the name.

Glad I took the time to read through the thread, but I think you were too niggardly in your comment, especially for the origin of this word; related to the Old Norse verb nigla = "to fuss about small matters". So the word is almost native to the region (smile!)
