Gallup: Most Americans for Raising Minimum Wage
Gallup ^ | 11/12/2013 | Andrew Dugan

Posted on 11/12/2013 7:42:45 AM PST by SeekAndFind

With momentum building at the federal and state level to increase hourly base pay, more than three-quarters of Americans (76%) say they would vote for raising the minimum wage to $9 per hour (it is currently $7.25) in a hypothetical national referendum, a five-percentage-point increase since March. About one-fifth (22%) would vote against this.

Voters in New Jersey amended the state constitution last week to raise the minimum wage $1 to $8.25, by 61% to 39%. Yet a Gallup poll conducted Nov. 5-6 shows that an even greater percentage of Americans would vote for an even higher minimum wage. Of course, Congress, rather than the people via a national vote, holds the actual authority to raise the minimum wage. Despite President Barack Obama's State of the Union call to raise the wage to $9 -- and widespread rallies populated mainly by hourly fast-food workers -- legislation that would accomplish this goal has thus far languished. More recently, the Obama administration has voiced support for the Harkin-Miller bill, which would raise the minimum wage even higher -- to $10.10.

A law that would raise the minimum wage to $9 an hour with automatic increases tied to the inflation rate is only slightly less popular, with 69% saying they would vote for it, and 28% against it. The amendment New Jersey voters passed does link the wage to inflation, but many legislative bills have not done that.

No, but if people thought that they could lose their job they might. Or if they thought that because the store had to pay more money to the people at the checkout, they are now getting less food with their card.

Crazy! But dems will do this soon. That is why this poll.

75% of Americans have no concept of the basic economic prinicples you are referring to. Their opinions are molded by largely by the entertainment industry. The people in the entertainment industry are generally more insulated from reality than those whose opinions they are molding. It makes for a bizarre and irrational negative feedback.

I think it should be $500 per hour. Then when bread goes up to $250 a loaf, it will have to be raised to $600 per hour, and when bread goes to $300, etc etc.

But of course most people don’t understand and think money comes from the government wishing it into existence. Sadly, they are almost right.

Always has been.
Not only is it “free* (to those being polled) but Dems have crafted their own economic arguments that raising the minimum wage leads to MORE job creation, not less.

This one fool went on Melissa Harris Perry’s show Saturday and said that it would kill some jobs and he got called a liar by some gay sounding white lib.

If this is to be believed, then you must believe “most Americans” are totally ignorant of economics and are lacking in basic business principals that protect them and their families from poverty. I believe...

A natural reaction from Americans who are feeling desperate. We’ve tightened our belts as far as they can go, looked and failed at finding a better job, and yet costs continue to rise. Raising the minimum wage isn’t the answer, but when you are running out of options, I can completely understand. Being optimistic, I’m at least happy to see most Americans aren’t flat out saying they are resorting to crime to put food on the table. Guess that comes later, eh?

When I was a teen I worked at a McDonalds for a time. I made $1.10 an hour. At no time did I think I should be making a “living wage” much less as much as the owner.

"money...thin air"

It does for millions of Obamatons. Think Obama's stash. After decades of leftist indoctrination, I'd bet the majority of adults are the most economically ignorant Americans ever.

That 3 out of 4 say that the minimum wage should be raised indicates that the schools have failed to educate students on capitalism is an unbiased manner.

Many societal ills can be attributed leftists who have taken over the schools and colleges.

I don’t particularly think minimum wage is a great thing, but if they are going to have it, why not have it hooked into the raise that seniors and military get every year for Social Security....maybe 1.5 percent won’t be so attractive to Americans after all.

Chase off yet more American jobs.

Minimum wage has been around for numerous decades and we still have jobs. In fact, I find it hilarious that people say that jobs aren’t around. Business are dire need for help. The sky is falling is so stupid for the democrats to use.

Why keep farting around with baby steps. Just raise the min to $1000 per hour and launch everyone into the middle class, which is where obama claims he wants most Americans to end up?

RE: $1000 per hour and launch everyone into the middle class

That would be $8000 a day on a typical workday or $40,000 a week !!

I’d like to be in THAT kind of middle class.
