Bishop Zubik says he won’t cooperate with government mandate

PITTSBURGH — The Roman Catholic bishop of Pittsburgh said that he will refuse to sign a document allowing a third-party insurer to provide preventative reproductive services for employees of a diocese-related charity even if it means that the nonprofit will have to pay fines.

According to Channel 11's news exchange partners at TribLIVE, Bishop David Zubik said Tuesday in federal court in Pittsburgh that he wouldn't be able to live with himself "knowing that we're contradicting what we believe."

The Pittsburgh and Erie dioceses are challenging a new health care mandate that requires religious employers to either provide contraceptive and abortion coverage or certify their objections on moral grounds so an insurance company can provide such coverage.

David Allen Zubik is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He is the twelfth and current Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, having previously served as Bishop of Green Bay from 2003 to 2007.

Bishop Zubik described the University of Notre Dame's decision to have President Barack Obama deliver its commencement speech and receive an honorary degree as "painful" and "embarrassing," noting that Obama is "the single most outspoken pro-abortion president since the issue was foisted upon the country by the Supreme Court."

Americans voted for the baby-killer TWICE. We deserve him. Sad commentary on this supposedly Judeo-Christian country.

Muslims welcome all babies, all babies. I lived in the middle east (five years) and saw this pro-life, pro-baby mentality. We could take this ONE, tiny lesson from another culture, maybe. At least we could try to focus on the new life rather than the wishes of a selfish mother who wants her baby's life snuffed out.

Dear Bishop Zubik, Pittsburgh's Representative, Mike Doyle (D, PA-14) was instrumental in passing the Obamacare bill.

Doyle convinced Rep Stupak and his followers that Obamacare didn't mandate abortion and contraceptive care.

Stupak caved and the bill passed.

Doyle claims to be a Catholic.

It's your canonical duty to excommunicate Doyle.

No we don’t deserve him. Most Americans probably didn’t vote for him, if you take into consideration the fraud level and also the fact that 12% of the electorate (on a good day) turned out 98% of their bloc to achieve 20% of the votes for him simply because he was black (sort of).

However, it was certainly close - but even if it hadn’t been, nobody deserves this evil person.

BTW, Muslims oppose abortion of Muslims, because domination by population is their goal. But many US abortionists are Muslims (Pakistanis, Middle Easterners and African Muslims of various stripes) because abortion of a non-Muslim is simply a way of making a buck.

One of the best books I have read about the Muslim attitude toward non-Muslim women and children was, oddly enough, a book entitled “The Turkish Passion,” by the Spanish author Antonio Gala, who normally writes romance novels. But this was excellent.

Maybe you should look to the Christian vision for your inspiration. We had a relic of JPII here in St Augustine the other day, and while I am not particularly one of his fans because I thought he could have done more to correct the errors and scandals, many good things he wrote about the family and children and life were read at the service (a Rosary). We need to focus on that.

Doyle's predecessor, ten-term Democrat William Coyne, who passed away recently, was regularly celebrated and feted at Catholic Church events all over town. And he NEVER met an abortion he wouldn't vote for.

I attend daily Mass and have done so since 1981.
I am really not interested in relics, though I certainly wouldn't nay-say or disparage their efficacy or importance to others. Those things aren't the essence of the person. His soul is and that soul is NOT with us.

After Mass I join in the rosary. After that I do the Stations of the Cross myself.

I do these things because I need all the help I can get!

There are very few resident non-Muslims in KSA, except for the contract labor that comes to clean their palaces, work in their hospitals, etc. Many of these people are Filipino Christians, who are essentially slaves and have been tried for bizarre charges, even put to death, etc.

If you’re a well off foreigner (probably working for an American oil company, such as many people I’ve known), I’m sure you’ll get good treatment.

1. I really don't buy into your definition of the importance of relics. But, that's me. And, trust me, I know all about the physicality of Christianity. I've been one all my life and have had the indoctrination and believe in all of it.
I lived in a Muslim country for five years and I found that they all weren't evil devils. My Muslim boss was one of the kindest men I ever met.
We had a daily Mass in our little Muslim town with ARAMCO. I wanted to go the the 9:00 A.M. Mass. It was a 2-minute walk, lasted 20 minutes and I ALWAYS made up the time at my lunch hour. My Indian Catholic co-worker REALLY resented me doing this. He told me to stop or he would tell on me to my Muslim Arab boss.

I called his bluff. I'll never forget that confrontation. My boss heard out my co-worker and then said to both of us (not their real names): "John, God is number one. There is always time for God. Mary can go pray anytime she wants to."
I don't know whose mouth dropped open farther or faster, mine or John's, but I DID go to Mass every day because I could and because it was comforting to me. It was a habit I started and continue to this day.
I found my faith in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

True enough. The Filipinos don't have a particularly good life there sometimes. WE loved them and they loved us because there is a long GOOD history between the Philippines and the USA. We Americans did what we could to make their lives better. I hope some of us succeeded sometimes.

That was as stupid as trying to sell booze, made in the illegal stills of the Aramcons or smuggled into the country by other stupids, to the Saudis. The company didn't mind if we made our own booze. We were very average Americans, working for ARAMCO, the Arabian-AMERICAN Oil Company, now called SAUDI Aramco.
The Saudis bought out the big four oil companies, three American companies and Shell, a Dutch company. It cost the Saudis more money than...well, who knows. But, I'm sure that the King, who personally owns all the oil (and natural gas that comes up with the oil, once burned off, now gathered and liquefied in LNG plants) took the zillions needed out of his "chump-change" drawer and bought the oil/gas rights BACK from the oil companies.
By the way, the King owns all the petroleum and gas to PREVENT tribal/familial warfare.

We got good treatment if we had listened to and took to heart the ONE-WEEK orientation required for us. We took it in Houston, (YEW-son, to the uninformed lol.) There are ALWAYS rules in this life.
There were rules. My husband and I obeyed them.
After two years we bought a house in the USA.
Meanwhile we traveled to places I know that I wouldn't probably ever see: Egypt twice, once at Christmas (Picture an Arab Santa.:o) and another down the Nile, Kenya, India, China and ALL over Europe. We had a ball.
We came home after five years but were able to PAY OFF the house in only NINE years total.

My husband and I had five years of our adventure of a lifetime. He's gone now but those memories are precious.

I am meeting an old ARAMCO friend, from Texas of course, and we are spending Christmas together in Cancun...with her son, daughter and son-in-law. Those times made us tight friends.

My Saudi boss has passed away by now but I will NEVER forget his kindness and his love of God.

And may I add (as someone who grew up in S. Oakland) that Bill Coyne was INVISIBLE. He lived in the house he (and many siblings—my late mom was good friends w/2 of his late sisters) grew up in on Halket Street (across from Magee Hospital). He was old even back in the early 80s.

I am very heartened that Bishop Zubik is standing firm.
