Anxious congressional Democrats are threatening to abandon President Obama on a central element of his signature health care law, voicing increasing support for proposals that would allow Americans to retain the health insurance coverage they are losing because of the Affordable Care Act.
The dissent comes as a vote looms Friday in the Republican-controlled House on a bill that would allow Americans to keep their existing health coverage through 2014 without penalties. The measure, drafted by Representative Fred Upton, the Michigan Republican who is the chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, is opposed by the White House, which argues that it would severely undermine the Affordable Care Act by allowing insurance companies to continue to sell health coverage that does not meet the higher standard of Mr. Obamas health care law.
But a growing number of House Democrats, reflecting a strong political backlash to the rollout of the health care law, are warning the White House they might support the measure if the administration does not provide a strong alternative argument. The approaching House vote is shaping up as an important test for both the health measure and the unity that Democratic leaders have so far been able to maintain around the health law despite a fierce Republican attack against it.
In a closed-door meeting Wednesday of House Democrats and White House officials, tensions flared as several lawmakers upbraided the administration, saying that the president had put Democrats in a tough political position by wrongly promising consumers that they could keep their existing health care plans. In fact, hundreds of thousands of Americans have received cancellation notices from their insurers because their health care coverage does not meet the minimum standards dictated by the new law.

Lets get ready to RrrrrruuuuuuuuuummmmmbbbbLLLLLLLLLie..
A new level of stupid is taking place.
You either sponsor a bill to create the legislation to repeal the Affordable Healthcare Act of 2010, vote yes on it in both chambers and send it to the president for his signature, or you STFU and eat yer peas.
House Republicans should pass a clean, full repeal of Obamacare and make the Dems choke on it...
Remember the names the Dems call you Republicans? Remember Nancy Pelosi with that big-ass gavel and purposefully walked through Tea Party protesters daring them to say something vile to Rep. Lewis?
Remember how Dems shut you out of the debate and shoved this s--t sandwich down our throats?
Nope. Once the plans are cancelled, THAT'S IT.
It takes months for the plans to be re-registered with their state insurance regulator.
That would be my position. “its the law of the land” “Its settled law” deal with it.

The only real way to fix the problem of people losing their current coverage is to abandon all the new mandated “minimum standards” like mental health, substance abuse treatment, birth control, maternity care, children up to 26, etc. All those provisions are the main drivers of the higher costs. If Democrats aren’t talking about ditching those mandates, they aren’t serious about letting people keep their old plans.
Obama, tell ‘em “no way!” Remind them you’re worth losing elections for, and it’s time to eat their peas!
Terrorists!
Kabuki Threats and Theater. The Clown has their files. NSA, anyone?
I totally agree, Triple E.
Like Prohibition, Obamacare was a bad idea from the start, was imposed by elites, hurt average Americans, undermined the rule of law, and undermined confidence in government. Prohibition was, and Obamacare is, defended as being settled law. The solution for Obamacare is the same as was the case for Prohibition: REPEAL!!!
They won’t abandon him. They’re going to have the screws put to them and they’ll get money for their campaigns.
It’s all theater for the masses.
The GOP should demand either 1) complete repeal now or 2) ALL laws enforced with NO waivers for ANYONE!
Short way to put it - Democrats won’t join Ted Cruz and the Tea Party terrorists.
They just magically think the insurance companies can recreate these plans just because Congress passes a law that says “do over”? They ignore the legal issues and the computer system issues and then all the hopsitals and doctors who’ve adjusted their practices and billing...
They have FUBARd the pooch big time.
yes but it’s just beginning.
Just "hundreds of thousands"?! A little downplaying in the NY Slimes??
I agree.
