An Atlas 5 rocket is geared up to launch Monday with NASA's first mission dedicated to studying the Martian atmosphere, aiming to solve the puzzle of how Mars dried up and lost its life-supporting atmosphere eons ago. Liftoff of the MAVEN spacecraft from Cape Canaveral is set for 1:28 p.m. EST (1828 GMT), kicking off a 10-month cruise to the red planet.

Doesn’t this assume it was wet at some point? Not sure that is an established fact in the first place.
So it's going to study an atmosphere that doesn't exist anymore?

Mars has no magnetic field so the solar wind blew the atmosphere off over millions of years. So what’s the purpose of spending billions on this thing to find out what we already know?
Mars is a boring dead rusted rock, after this probe it will still be a boring dead rusted rock. Can we please go somewhere better like the moons of the outer gas giants?
An orbiter. The mission will characterize the atmospheric loss and map the magnetic field (”fields” in this case), among other things.

Too many clouds to see from my vantage point. A slow climb this time.
Are these the expert scientists that concluded the world was flat or that global warming is caused by humans primarily, if not solely by Americans.
I think it is too far from the sun as others are too close and don’t believe any ingredients necessary to support life as we understand it.

Launch continues to look entirely uneventful - exactly as hoped for - at about 22 minutes post-launch.
But is that due to people of God voting for those that don’t to hold their purse strings.
Gotta qwershun or two. How much ($$) are we talking about here and what return will we receive for this investment?
In a time of economic uncertainty...should we be spending millions of tax dollars with little payback.
Just sayin.
