It's quite possible that the single stupidest school lunch policy on the planet comes courtesy of a strange interpretation of the Manitoba Government's Early Learning and Child Care lunch regulations (an earlier version of this article incorrectly pointed at the Manitoba Child Care Association as the source of the strangely interpreted policy). Apparently if a child's lunch is deemed "unbalanced", where "balance" refers to ensuring that a lunch conforms to the proportions of food groups as laid out by Canada's awful Food Guide, then that child's lunch is "supplemented", and their parent is fined.
Blog reader Kristen Bartkiw received just such a fine.
She sent her children to daycare with with lunches containing leftover homemade roast beef and potatoes, carrots, an orange and some milk.
She did not send along any "grains".
As a consequence the school provided her children with, I kid you not, supplemental Ritz Crackers, and her with a $10 fine.

From the, gubmint is the solution to all your problems department.
And remember if you don’t have a problem,
the government will find you one.
Liberal fascism, coming soon to a country near you. And if a person refuses to pay the fine?
so stupid... who is to say that they do not get their grains at other times of the day? and what is it to anybody if they get zero grains in a day? ridiculous... i would absolutely never send my kids to government school...
Say it with me you punk kid! GOOD CRACKER! SAY IT! Or I’ll send Andy Griffith’s ghost to haunt you!
Every child should be homeschooled. Or in a Christian school.
Kids are on a paleo diet.
“Mmmm! Good Cracker!”
The grain heavy food pyramid was a scam.
Indeed, high fructose corn syrup, being a “grain,” is obviously a healthy choice.
Definitely not. Milk is not paleo. The potatoes are ‘iffy’ for paleo.
And probably the reason we’re so much more overweight than we were before the ‘food pyramid’.
Healthy Whole Grain. It’s Whole Grain, but probably not very Healthy.
“She sent her children to daycare with with lunches containing leftover homemade roast beef and potatoes, carrots, an orange and some milk.”
Yum! That’s some serious lunch food. Mom should be applauded for sending them to school with real home cookin’, not fined.
Next time, though, maybe she should make a point of adding some Yorkshire pudding along with the roast beef. (Take that and stuff it in your “grains” requirement, ya fascists!)

Not likely ;)
Had she put the roast beef between a couple slices of bread ... Problem solved!
Even if you are going to reduce meat and dairy, I’d think more fruits and vegetables would be healthier than more grains/carbs.
My stepdaughter went to Christian elem school and came home one day with a note telling us to be sure her “next lunch included items that were both healthy AND that she liked.” Apparently the carrot sticks were left uneaten and that was unacceptable to the lunchroom nannies.
Micro-control is not just for the public sector!
