Just as important as shot placement is ammo choice. .45 hardball can get the job done but 230 grain HP +p rounds tend to create a much more significant wound cavity for example. Multiple hits with such ammo significantly reduces the incidence of recidivism as well.

Actually it isn’t a happy ending. Like someone else said the perp lived and only got a year jail sentence. Where his bullet scars are probably considered a badge of honor and an indication to others that the game has more benefits for rep and cred building than risks.

He’ll probably be doing it again once he’s out. And won’t be seen as a deterrent to others inclined to give it a try. Or worse, he’ll decide to further up his cred and rep by seeking revenge on the shooter. On an earlier thread someone mentioned that lawyers advise knockout game victims to drop the matter because the ferals can be very revenge minded.

If you carry a weapon and run into this situation, the best ending is you alive and the perp dead.
