The springs at Pamukkale are still a big draw.

The classical-period Greeks appear to have invented tourism, that is, travel for the sake of travel and seeing the sights. But tourist traps arose, and I suspect Pluto’s Gates was one of those.

here’s another:

To suffocate a sparrow quickly, it might need to be more than just a “toxic” level. Perhaps it was a mix of carbonaceous gases. If it had some carbon MONoxide in it, it would rapidly poison any red blooded creature.

Some of that is probably due to Ataturk’s secularization efforts.

I was wondering about the funding. Also, I hope these sites are well guarded, as I can see some mohammedans destroying the artifacts. Maybe someone could tell them that their 72 virgins are in the cave.

What do you make of this claim in the article?

Indeed, the fumes coming from the depths of Hierapolis’ phreatic groundwater produced hallucinations.

(Other than the apparent redundancy.)

I just looked at google to see if I could find out who's funding it, but couldn't.

I did gather that in general a lot of funding comes from nonprofit foundations. In the current case, you have to figure the University of Salento picked up some of the bill.

My comment re Ataturk was more to the good attitude of Turkey rather than funding. They were very scrupulous in preserving archaeological remains in their recent construction of the Bosphorus tunnel.

I know what you mean about preserving things from Taliban-types.

Oh, I realize that. It seems that his reforms did do a lot of good there during and after his reign, but I wonder which way things are trending now.

Do you work for Erdogan and the Turk propaganda machine? Turks have done nothing to preserve - they are the masters of death and destruction.

Why is it that so many Americans have bought into the fabricated narrative about Mustafa Kemal - a perpetrator of genocide par excellence? You would not say “he did a lot of good” thes about Stalin or HItler or Pol Pot...or maybe you would...

I'm a fan of the Byzantine Empire. I consider Manzikert one of the big disasters in world history.

BTW I don't work for Erdogan and the Turk propaganda machine.

Okay, sounds like I have a lot to learn about Attaturk. Which is not to say that I know much about him to begin with.
