Americans back Iran deal by 2-to-1 margin: Reuters/Ipsos poll

Americans back a newly brokered nuclear deal with Iran by a 2-to-1 margin and are very wary of the United States resorting to military action against Tehran even if the historic diplomatic effort falls through, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed on Tuesday.

The findings were rare good news in the polls for President Barack Obama, whose approval ratings have dropped in recent weeks because of the botched rollout of his signature healthcare reform law.

According to the Reuters/Ipsos survey, 44 percent of Americans support the interim deal reached between Iran and six world powers in Geneva last weekend, and 22 percent oppose it.

While indicating little trust among Americans toward Iranian intentions, the survey also underscored a strong desire to avoid new U.S. military entanglements after long, costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The assumption is Americans are actually read into the details... which of course they aren’t.

All they’re thinking is Iran - nukes - deal. They have no clue as to the ramifications of it. If it doesn’t affect or change their personal situation, it’s meaningless to them.

That’s OK . . . Iran supports war with the US. They’ll do it for us if we sit on our hands.

I wonder how much Americans approved of Munich by?

I don't know of any polls of Americans on the issue in 1938, but here's one taken of UK citizens at the time:

http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/public_opinion_and_appeasement_i.htm

Public opinion in 1938 seemed reasonably in favour of Neville Chamberlain and what was later to be termed appeasement when he returned with "peace in our time" after the September 1938 Munich Agreement. Opinion polls appear to show that the majority of the nation was in support of the stance taken by Chamberlain.

"Should Britain promise assistance to Czechoslovakia if Germany acts as it did towards Austria?" (Asked March 1938)

Yes: 33%
No: 43%
No opinion: 24%

"Hitler says that he has no more territorial ambitions in Europe. Do you believe him?" (Asked October 1938)

Yes: 7%
No: 93%

"Which of these views comes closest to your views of Chamberlain's policy of appeasement?" (Asked February 1939)

1. It is a policy that will ultimately lead to a lasting peace in Europe: 28%

2. It will keep us out of war until we have time to rearm: 46%

3. It is bringing war nearer by whetting the appetite of the dictators: 24%

4. No opinion: 2%

You are speaking as if we choose to fabricate enemies to make war on us. This is what democrats do. The GOP is only inept at expressing their stance on war and that of the democrates whonuse war for political purposes.

Tomorrow Obama can declare a war and make it popular... heck he already has made himself popular with previously peacenick blacks by declaring war on whites.

These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted for Thomson Reuters from November 24-26, 2013. For the survey, a sample of 591 Americans ages 18+ who are married or living with a partner were interviewed online. The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

Online poll, using a new term "credibility interval." From IPSOS:

A credibility interval can be developed to measure the theoretical accuracy of nonprobability surveys. The credibility interval relies on assumptions that may be difficult to validate, and the results may be sensitive to these assumptions. So while the adoption of the credibility interval may be appropriate for nonprobability samples such as opt-in online polls, the underlying biases associated with such polls remain a concern.

Consequently, AAPOR urges caution when using credibility intervals or otherwise interpreting results from electoral polls using non-probability online panels. The Association continues to recommend the use of probability based polling to measure the opinions of the general public.

The biggest whopper claim, to me, is that this poll represents "Americans." I see this claim more and more. Unless the poll is of registered voters, how can they claim that the people are "Americans," and not just people residing here, illegally or with green cards?
