Trace Adkins - You're Gonna Miss This

She was starin' out the window of their SUV
Complainin', sayin', I can't wait to turn eighteen
She said, I'll make my own money and I'll make my own rules
Momma, put the car in park out there in front of the school
And she kissed her head, and said, I was just like you

You're gonna miss this
You're gonna want this back
You're gonna wish these days
Hadn't gone by so fast

These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you're gonna miss this

Before she knows it she's a brand new bride
In her one bedroom apartment and her daddy stops by
He tells her it's a nice place, she says, It'll do for now
Starts talkin' about babies and buyin' a house
Daddy shakes his head and says, Baby, just slow down

Cuz' you're gonna miss this
You're gonna want this back
You're gonna wish these days
Hadn't gone by so fast

These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you're gonna miss this

Five years later there's a plumber
Workin' on the water heater
Dog's barkin', phone's ringin'
One kid's cryin' and one kid's screamin'
And she keeps apologizin'

He says, They don't bother me
I've got two babies of my own
One's thirty-six, one's twenty-three
Huh, it's hard to believe

But you're gonna miss this
You're gonna want this back
You're gonna wish these days
Hadn't gone by so fast

These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you're gonna miss this

You're gonna miss this
Yeah, you're gonna miss this

Teach Your Children - Crosby Stills & Nash

You, who are on the road must have a code that you can live by.
And so become yourself because the past is just a good bye.
Teach your children well, their father's hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams, the one they fix, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

And you, of the tender years can't know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth, they seek the truth before they can die.
Teach your parents well, their children's hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams, the one they fix,the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry, So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

You’ve chosen two great songs, about families, sadly broken families. But they are excellent examples of how serious subjects can be well treated in rocking, popular tunes.

There was a lot of that in the Sixties.

Star Spangled Banner - Madison Rising

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8C7i9kdEf8

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land, land of the free and the home of the brave?

Because we are the brave
Yes we are the brave
We’ll fight tyranny
In the name of the free
We are the U.S. of A

For those unaware
That flag is still there
It’s our future to save
This land of the brave
The U.S. of A

Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land, land of the free and the home of the brave?

The guy who did my mortgage when I built my house and then two years ago refinanced it is the uncle to the guy who wrote “You’re Gonna Miss This” - in fact, he sent me the cd with this song on it and autographed it! I love that song!

I've been immersed in the Met's 1990 production of Wagner's Ring cycle. What a family. Wotan fathers 9 girls from the Earth Mother. He beds a human woman to create fraternal twins, one of whom he hopes will steal the Ring back from Fafner. The twin siblings mate, reproduce, and Wotan has to kill his own son at his wife's urging. He also has to put one of his daughters from the Earth Mother into suspended animation, and she ends up with her nephew, who becomes being the instrument Wotan wanted to create, but couldn't.

Talk about dysfunctional families.

I'm used to the idea of Brünnhilde being six feet tall with a size 48 double-D breastplate. Hildegard Behrens is teeny-tiny! She has the bearing, and boy does she have the voice! But she's so small. I love the way Levine slows down the orchestra with some finely placed rubati to let her sing her Hojoto comfortably. He lets her sail the high C's.

Wotan's Farewell to Brünnhilde from Act 3 of "Die Walküre"

The screen got all blurry when I watched this scene tonight. Funny about that.

Brunhilde has got to be BIG, but of course, it is the VOICE that counts.

Someone jested at me today about my “petite” stature.

I rose to my full height and said: “I may only be 5’2”, but I ride a Full Sized Harley, Play a Full-Sized Bass, and Shoot a Full-Sized gun.”

I got an ovation!

My mom, an orphan, always made family her #1 priority. Miss you this Thanksgiving Mom, but you are with the love of your life (my dad) and your parents in heaven.

Good evening,Maestro, and Happy Thanksgiving!

This is the production with James Morris as Wotan, IIRC. I recorded it from PBS when it aired in 1990.
