Yes. I see that picture with his smug face titled “My work is nearly done here” and it really hits home.

I never thought so much damage could be done in such a short time.

Communism is wrong.

Apartheid was wrong. Slavery is wrong.

He embraced a wrong ideology. No argument here. He is also the primary figure that defeated apartheid. Right. He and the ANC committed atrocities. Wrong. There were many horrible things done to blacks by whites in South Africa. Wrong. He prevented massive bloodshed when apartheid was overturned. Right. South Africa will probably turn into a national version of Detroit. Wrong.

Why would you not say he wanted freedom/equality for his people? He chose a failed system of government although it promises equality for all (equal misery, but it appeals to a mob). The mob often buys the lie of communism just as American unions do.

Shades of grey.

Most likely its a little colder there than here! Personally, I prefer Canmore. Just south of Canmore are a series of Provincial Parks in 'K Country' (Kananaskis). Less expensive than Banff; no Federal fees. That said, to buy even a bachelor condo in Canmore likely starts about 375K!

There ya go! Banff.

And if you are quite wealthy:

>> Tutu’s presence managed to keep at least some sort of connection to God in the picture. As diluted as he was, I don’t think he dipped to the depths of a Jeremiah Wright. <<

There are numerous South African political figures from a strong religious faith-based background. The religious makeup of the country is somewhat similar to the US (70-80% Christian). In terms of adherents and influence on the religious culture of the country, Tutu would be pretty low on the list, since Anglicans make up only 1.7 million of the country's 53 million people. There are far more Catholics and pentecostal Christians in South Africa, but I doubt the media gave any coverage to their ministers who fought against apartheid, especially if those pastors weren't leftists. In short, I think Tutu is a media creation and his actual influence on the country's religious faith is miminimal. He gets news coverage the same reason that Gene Robinson, the "openly gay bishop of New Hampshire", gets coverage in the U.S.

I agree Tutu doesn't belong in the Jemimah Wright camp (insane red-faced hate-America rants and crackpot conspiracies about how whitey is pure evil). Nevertheless, when it comes to South African politics, I'd place him firmly in the Jesse Jackson Jr. camp. Both claim to be men of God and give nice polite media interviews about how they have a broad-based coalition of followers and how they're open-minded and tolerant towards all, while demonizing anyone who isn't hard-left like them, and they love to demagogue an issue and use a racist/sexist/homophobic angle when there is none, in order to get their name in the news.

Back on the topic though, I think here's the real problem: post-aparthedid South Africa WASN'T designed to be a one-party system, but it evolved that way because of numerous factors, and I can't blame Mandela because he genuinely made an effort to establish a coalition government and multi-party system with free elections. Mandela gave up his broader agenda of state ownership for the sake of a democratic transition. He was still openly socialist and believed in destructive socialist policies but fundamentally accepted the market system in the end (and did not bust the budget, despite immense pressure from the South African Communists). Unfortunately, since Mandela's rule, the ANC has pretty much established absolute power over South Africa and can pass any socialist legislation they want, because the "opposition" groups are a joke.

The second largest party and the "official opposition" in government is the Democratic Alliance, which appears to be largely centrist party made up of white people disgruntled with the ANC policies, and it includes the remnants of both the old apartheid National Party government AND the old white people party that opposed the apartheid regime at the time(strange bedfellows). They only have about 67 seats out of 400 in the SA parliament, and they're never going to win an outright majority or even enough to form a government as long as their votes only come from whites (which make up a small minority of South Africans) and the only issue they all agree on is "ANC is bad".

If someone over there grew a brain and decided to merge ALL the clearly conservative political parties in Parliment together (namely the Freedom Front Plus Party, the Inkatha Freedom Party , the African Christian Democratic Party, and the United Christian Democratic Party, THEN you'd have an opposition movement in the country that has a clear platform and policies, AND a multiracial membership and candidate slate, but they'd still start the game with only about 25 seats in Parliament -- making it a huge uphill climb not only to be recognized as a viable force in government, but to replace the DA as the "official opposition" to the ANC.

Basically I think a lot of the backlash against Mandela from conservatives is not because of what he actually did in office (though he obviously did a LOT of nasty things BEFORE he became President), but what South Africa eventually became after his party took over.

The reason the Left was so involved with the anti-apartheid movement was to counter Reagan and Thatcher’s focus on the true source of evil in the world, The Soviet Union.

His group slaughtered hundreds of blacks for not joining the ANC, you do realize that right?

Do you think he wanted freedom/equality for non-ANC blacks?

Apartheid was not slavery. By the way, ‘apartheid’ means ‘separate’ or ‘apart’. Are those words evil?

What do you call the voluntary apartheid in every American city, in every corporate employee cafeteria?

MSM lies and has lied to us about life in South Africa and Rhodesia, pre and post apartheid.

Is there any so-called “conservative” who wouldn’t slobber over the dead commie? Anyone? Coulter, Buchanan, Cruz?

He committed numerous sins either directly or through his group. Whites committed numerous sins either directly or indirectly through apartheid and inequality.

Can you demonize one without the other? If not for one, would the other have existed? He became the face for a movement to overturn injustice, just as MLK did. MLK was another flawed man, albeit without blood all over his hands. However, MLK did not live on the continent of Africa.

I think the ANC was evil, but when given the chance for the ANC to take absolute power he encouraged a coalition and peace. In that respect he likely saved lives. When given the opportunity to enrich himself he did not do so. When given the chance for revenge on his enemies he appeared to forgive them. He never controlled the ANC until he refused his pardon and became the face of the anti-apartheid movement.

His legacy will be what he did in the last half of his life rather than what he did before. Perhaps his divorce from Winnie was a divorce from the more extreme wing of the ANC she championed. Only God knows and he is the one who has ultimate judgment of Mandela.

All “whites” are equally guilty so its okay?

I don’t need to read to past the first lines do I??

You think like a leftard if that is your answer.

Too bad about those innocent men, women and children who were murdered by that terror bombing.... but they were WHITE so they are evenly demons as the terrorists.

Just like the knockout game

White people had it coming!!

It is the exact same mentality.

So instead of trying to equate Nelson Mandela’s terror group with some of the radical white groups that harmed blacks, you go all the way to make TERRORISM on par with simply being white.

“he encouraged coalition and peace”

You must have stopped paying attention after he became President.

“He never controlled the ANC...” he controlled, he led its TERRORISM wing for years and years, which was why he was put into prison for all the crimes he admitted to. 156 counts.

But hey, I am as guilty as the man who led a terror movement because I am, as you say, white.

see 213 and watch a FReeper equate Mandela’s terrorism to simply being white. That apparently evens things out.

You have been talking about the man who led a terrorist organization. BTW, his wife had something special for hundreds of blacks who refused to join the ANC

but hey, it's okay because... white people exist in the world

Nelson Mandela the man who led the ANC's terrorist wing and admitted to 156 counts of violence. Like the Church Street Bombing that killed 17 innocent people and maimed around 200.

where is his trophy for that?

Nelson Mandela's terror group murdered more blacks than whites during its reign of terror. He did not believe those blacks had the freedom to not join the ANC.

great man.... but all this is okay to you, because white people still walk the face of the Earth I guess
