(Reuters) - Undocumented immigrants in Illinois began taking road tests on Tuesday to qualify for driver's licenses, starting a process expected to be closely watched by other U.S. states that are preparing to implement similar laws.
Illinois is the largest U.S. state to implement legislation allowing undocumented immigrants to get licenses - following in the steps of New Mexico and Washington.
Ten states in 2013 including Illinois enacted laws allowing unauthorized immigrants to receive driver's licenses or permits, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Implementation dates vary - California, the largest state by population, won't begin issuing licenses until 2015.
"They represent a growing trend toward inclusive state policies that recognize that immigrants are part of our community," said Melissa Keaney, an attorney with the National Immigration Law Center. "If someone's going to drive, we want them to be sure they know the rules off the road."
Keaney said "all eyes will be on Illinois" to see how their program works. About 25 states considered the issue in their 2013 legislative sessions, the NCSL said.
Supporters of the Illinois law said some 250,000 undocumented immigrants are already driving in the state, the fifth most populous. The new law requires them to take driver's tests and have liability insurance, thus making the roads safer, the supporters said.
Illinois started taking appointments for testing November 12, and has scheduled 5,500, according to Dave Druker, a spokesman for the Illinois Secretary of State.
Undocumented immigrants seeking a license in Illinois must show proof of insurance and, like other residents, must take a road test, a written test and a vision test. They also need to show they have lived in Illinois for a year by providing a rental agreement or other documents.

Hmmmmm....MOTOR VOTERS?
Does the license have a WETBACK sticker on it?
Will they be required to drive at 3 times the legal limit?
What can the people do when the Statehouse is the headquarters of treason?
ILLEGAL ALIENS should not be allowed to drive in this country!
I didn’t have any reasons for wanting to visit Illinois before, now I have even less, but I have to drive through it to get where I want to go.
Just dayum.
Fixed it.
Immigrants are foreigners who follow our immigration laws.
Foreigners who do not follow our immigration laws but are here legally are legal aliens.
Foreigners who do not follow our immigration laws but are here illegally are illegal aliens.
Which IL governor candidate is the best one on this issue? Brady and Dillard voted for that law. I hope that, if Rutherford wins, he’ll propose a bill that would repeal that law.
Once a candidate has gone and pandered to criminal invaders, they are forever disqualified from office as far as I’m concerned.
Documenting the Undocumented , now they know who and where you are ,LOL
THEN raid their homes and employers places of business, incarcerate them and fine them all including their aiders and abetters, let the poor honest citizen whose SSN's were being illegally used know about it, and fine all the financial institutions that provided the means for them to live illegally where other common criminals would have been simply arrested and sent straight to The Pen / Greybar Hotel.
Give it a bit of time to allow lots of information to be documented, then go after and penalize each and every one. When people pay lots of money for harboring fugitives, and I do mean LOTS of money, the lack of ready money will stop the rest from also flaunting our laws.
"Undocumented" apparently is no such thing, since without some accepted documents they would not be acquiring funds. The last several years I applied for a job I had to provide pounds of paperwork before they would hire. Follow the money -then make them all PAY!
Unable to track and deport Illegals me arse!
After dealing with the SecState DL office, going back home might look pretty good
Texas has a couple million illegal drivers we will be glad to send to IL. They not only drive, but drink and drive, and have killed thousands of innocent people over the years.
The issue of illegal immigration in general? Well it’s not that ***ker Rauner I can guarantee you that.
This crap bill (that should have been named in favor of George Ryan or maybe some of the people that George Ryan got killed) passed the Senate 41-14 (with one brave PRESENT vote from downstate rat Gary Forby and a handful of no shows) so I wouldn’t get bent of shape in terms of permanently hating on every Republican that voted for it.

Rutherford may well have voted for it too if he had still been a Senator. Has he said anything about it? If he’s against it he should say so, it would win him support in the primary. If he says nothing that doesn’t instill me with any confidence that he’d do anything about it. I think this battle is over and lost, illegals will legally menace our roads.
Dillard is scum and needs to be excoriated every time his filthy name is mentioned, he’s not the best Republican on any issue and neither is that bag of pus Rauner, no freepers should even consider voting for either of those combiner pigs.
Brady and Rutherford are the only choices as far as I’m concerned.
I think Brady was also voted for the dream act which also passed overwhelmingly, am I correct? What about Rutherford? Was that after he was elected Treasurer?
As an aside it’s way past time for that prick Forby to lose, District 59 down in the tip of state.
The headlines are misleading as they should read “Undocumented Democrats”
And will they be *exempt* from having to have car insurance? Or, will we just *subsidize* them?
A license in one state is a license in all states.
we already do..
Why do I pay for “uninsured motorist” coverage when everyone is suppose to have insurance???
If they can not even enforce having car insurance, how in Gods great earth are they gonna run our health care?
