Six-term Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) will run for reelection next year, POLITICO has confirmed.
The second most-senior Republican in the Senate guarded his decision so closely that even Senate leaders and top officials at the National Republican Senatorial Committee didn’t know what he was planning until he shared it with the press. He kept the political world waiting for his decision throughout the fall: he originally said he’d make his decision by the end of November, but that deadline passed with no word from the veteran senator.
He first shared his decision in an interview with Gannett on Friday morning.
State insiders largely expected Cochran, who turns 76 on Saturday, to step down: campaign finance records show he raised just $53,000 in the third quarter of this year, not the kind of sum expected for a senator the fall before a reelection battle. Cochran had $804,000 on hand at the end of September.
Cochran will face a primary challenge from state Sen. Chris McDaniel, a conservative state lawmaker who announced he was running for the seat earlier this fall. State observers say Cochran, with his long history in the state, should have little trouble getting reelected despite the challenge from McDaniel — he’ll have the support of the GOP establishment.
Andy Taggart, an attorney and veteran Republican in the state, said he believes Cochran will “handily defeat” McDaniel in the state’s June 3, 2014, primary.

I suspect he’s gone too. I live in a Desoto County and I don’t know anyone who likes Thad. That said, there is no depth too low for the GOP establishment.

True enough. But IIRC, he has very high ratings from the NRA and various pro-life groups. The reason he gets such low ratings from the others is that he is one of the Senate’s top ear-markers.
In other words, he has delivered billions of dollars to Mississippi, and whether we like it or not, all of that pork for the home folks — plus his pro-gun and pro-life records — should get him re-elected easily.
Primary qualifying is from Jan. 1 - Mar. 1, 2014. In less than three months
we’ll know who is in and who is out.
Probably talked into it. The only questions is who profits from his staying? Who is making money because he remains in office, and, then of course, McConnell, who needs to stay as Leader.
If those things remains important. Suppose, though, the “I” word comes to means something. Can we expect a 75 year old placeman to stand up and fight. McDaniel needs to make Obama the issue.
My guess is Cochran will run, win and sometime after the 2014 elections retire and let Gov. Bryant appoint a republican senator.
They are afraid if Cochran retires or loses in a primary then Jim Hood the Atty. Gen will run and be strong competition.
McDaniel would be the best guy for the job but this is just the way I see things happening.
They both need to go for sure. I used to like Wicker pretty well, but he has been moving left.
Andy Taggart was a supervisor in Hinds Co in a very safe district. He pretended he was going to run for reelection. An hour or so before the dead line he announced he wasn’t. His good friend was waiting court house. He walked in and Qualified to run. Too much like dimorats for me. Pi** on Andy Taggart

He was first elected to Congress in 1972 and to the Senate in 1978.
