One consequence of the botched launch of Obamacare is that it has, judging from his plummeting numbers with “Millennials,” diminished Barack Obama’s cool. It’s not merely that the website isn’t state-of-the-art but that the art it’s flailing to be state of is that of the mid-20th-century social program. The emperor has hipster garb, but underneath he’s just another Commissar Squaresville. So, health care being an irredeemable downer for the foreseeable future, this week the president pivoted (as they say) to “economic inequality,” which will be, he assures us, his principal focus for the rest of his term. And what’s his big idea for this new priority? Stand well back: He wants to increase the minimum wage!
Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos of Amazon (a non-government website) is musing about delivering his products to customers across the country (and the planet) within hours by using drones.

Steyn always seems to find one sentence that makes me want to laugh and cry simultaneously.

I read anyone that uses common sense and isn’t a flaming liberal, which is why I can’t get past two sentences of any NYT article. The last thing I read that really warmed my heart was Ted Cruez’s last speech in TX. I read just about everything that streams by on FRont Page News.
What we need, though, is a new kind of sign language that all liberals understand and can begin to comprehend the differences between actual reality and politicians who shit rainbows on their cherios.

Come on Freepers! Careful reading calls for closer inspection, more thoughtful thinking, and a call to action! As the job market shrinks, we must be careful to cultivate those areas that present themselves as holding the potential for American recovery and success! Steyn is dancing all around the idea that there’s an entire wave of job opportunities being threatened here. It used to be street bums would push shopping carts around the city to collect empty bottles to bring in for the nickels and dimes. Maybe one day, they can do the same with used needles left behind by mind-numbed junkies!

I kinda miss those deposit bottles, I remember when someone who was hungry could spend half an hour walking the road and pick up enough bottles to buy a meal. I had an uncle who became disabled for regular work due to arthritis but for a time said that he often earned as much or more in a day by going around to houses in the country and asking if he could haul off their bottles with his pickup truck. He said that once he made eighty dollars in one day back in the sixties, that would be more like a thousand dollars now. He hauled all those bottles from a shack where the people seemed to have very low income but spent their money on a Pepsi addiction while being too sorry to take the bottles back when they went for more Pepsi. I think there was probably a banjo boy on the porch. For that kind of income I could afford to gas up my old F-150.

Pelosi is channeling Marx here nearly word for word. Substitute "wage slavery" for health insurance and it's a match. It's all about living a life you don't have to earn.
And, if you’re wondering why every Big Government program assumes you’re a feeble child, that’s because a citizenry without “work and purpose” is ultimately incompatible with liberty.
You don't need liberty, just do as you're told. One day they'll tell you, "you have liberty" and you'll believe it.
Depressing stuff. Even the more articulate proponents of Big Government appear not to grasp just how very big that is likely to be, and what will happen to it when no one it purports to serve is capable of producing the wealth necessary to sustain it.
