Gen. Colin Powell calls for universal health care in the U.S.
Puget Sound Business Journal ^ | December 6, 2013 | Valerie Bauman

Former Secretary of State and longtime Republican Colin Powell is calling for a universal health care solution in the U.S. “We are a wealthy enough country with the capacity to make sure that every one of our fellow citizens has access to quality health care,” he said Thursday at a Seattle fundraiser for prostate cancer. “(Let’s show) the rest of the world what our democratic system is all about and how we take care of all of our citizens." The retired four-star general, a prostate cancer survivor, spoke at the Prostate Cancer Survivors Celebration Breakfast, organized by UW Medicine and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center . Powell took the opportunity to share some of his own experiences and to publicly call for a health care solution similar to those in Canada, Japan and other countries that have a universal, single-payer system. In the case of his own cancer diagnosis, he recovered, thanks to what he described as universal health care offered through the U.S. military. “I am not an expert in health care, or Obamacare, or the Affordable Care Act, or however you choose to describe it, but I do know this: I have benefited from that kind of universal health care in my 55 years of public life,” Powell said. “And I don’t see why we can’t do what Europe is doing, what Canada is doing, what Korea is doing, what all these other places are doing.”

Actually, that picture raises more questions than it answers.

Obama poisoned the well, and men like Powell have as well. I might support Col. West, but I am not certain. I have become very suspicious candidates with military backgrounds. My congressman, Scott Perry, has a dubious military background, where he made his rank through politics not achievement. Perry has voted fairly well, but he lacks conviction. for instance, he recently said he would consider ENDA because Arlen Toomey voted for it and Toomey is a good man. While I don't expect Perry to say, "I ain't voting for any fag bill", he could dismiss the notion and show some conservative principles without elaborating. Perry reeks of military politics.

The best thing that could ever happen to West in my eyes is to hear that he would never be a general because he wouldn't put up with Pentagon BS. I am not sure if West wouldn't turn into a Powell. My uncertainly means that I wouldn't vote for him unless he was a last resort.

I love it when someone like Powell says something stupid like this... Talking about the health care provided by the US military... Why isn't he in the VA system now? I wonder what he'd say about it, if he was told that he would have to wait at least a year before he can even apply for any of his health benefits.

I saw the future of health care today... I had to go to the post office. There were 11 people in line when I walked in, and there was 1 window open. 2 other workers came out of the back to do something at other windows, but they immediately disappeared back into the building. I had to ship 3 gifts, and it only took me 55 minutes in line, and another 3 minutes at the windows. When I left, there were 22 people in line.

Under obamacare you are considered too old for medical care. You will be denied care and will like in England be put on a death list (80,000 in England - see Liverpool care).

So insist you be treated the same as you would if obamacare was fully implemented. Lead!

Anyone who is not willing to fight to the death for freedom, deserves all that is coming to them and more.

You just said a few posts back that you're about to leave America and move to a "saner" country.

Which is it? You gonna run, or stay and fight?

That’s interesting. The veterans around here tell me that system is so screwed up, they only use it to get their meds.

The rest of the time they go to a private practice doctor and hospital for their real care.

I think Colonel West is pretty solid, but I totally understand where you’re coming from. After several years of seeing all these backstabbings and betrayals coming from inside the GOP (the treatment given Palin, the Romney flipflops, the turnarounds by Rubio/Ryan, Rove and the corrupt moneymen, etc.), I’ve become so intensely distrustful of EVERYONE that I can barely describe it.

Just a few short years ago, I used to at least have a generic sense that the average GOP politician at least somewhat shared my conservative values and ideology to a fair extent. I no longer sense that in the least anymore. Quite the opposite. I now have to see a long track-record of solid accomplishments and definitive position statements before I’ll ever even remotely ‘consider’ giving someone my vote. And although it would have once been an inconceivable notion to me, I can easily see myself now sitting out future elections entirely. In fact, I already started this process by refusing to give Romney my vote last year.

“How much $$ did he get to say this?”

Not necessary. CP is glad to sell the country down the river whenever he can.

“We are a wealthy enough country with the capacity to make sure that every one of our fellow citizens has access to quality health care,” he said Thursday [...]

"What you mean 'we,' Paleface Colin?"

Some of us could be described as "wealthy." Generally speaking, they are hard-working people, who have had to make lots of sacrifices - at least in their early years, and often even after after attaining a certain level of financial success.

That does not justify viewing them as a blood bank at which tse-tse flies, unwilling to make use of the nearly endless supply of opportunities this land has to offer, can "convenience" themselves.

Colin Powell - just another guy who woke up one morning and thought, "We don't have enough Big Government yet!"

Regards,

In a peculiar way, we owe a debt of gratitude to Obama and his administration for essentially giving the green light for every idiot to spew their socialist collectivist bile, unencumbered by public shame, ridicule, or rebuke. Makes them extremely easy to spot. They no longer feel the need to hide, but we now have their number. Powell is now fully unmasked as the lizard he is.

So we will all become Eloi and they will be the Morlocks?

Why would Wells portray the socialist ideal represented by the Eloi as being preyed upon by those who did the work? It is almost as if Wells recognized that socialism would not work.

There already is universal health care, in essence. Always has been.

What Colin Powell is calling for is a socialized, subsidized, Tyrannical form of universal health care... he is an 0bama supporter. Enough said.

I knew Powell was a phony when he claimed all the credit for winning the first Gulf War that wiped out the Iraqi military.

Gen. Schwartzkoff (sp?) led that successful war, and Powell jumped into media briefings like he was the star.

He, like Hillary and Kerry, was also a lousy SecofState.

He’s a racist, socialist, egoist in the same vein as Obama.

It’s dispicable that he refers to himself as a Republican.
