Gillespie, who has never sought public office, floated the trial balloon at The Homestead resort, where about 500 activists and party leaders are gathered for a three-day annual meeting known as “The Advance.”

“It’s safe to say that there’s people talking about it here, and I’m listening to them,” he said, noting that nearly three months remain until the the Feb. 1 filing deadline. “I’ve been flattered to have it raised. There’s plenty of time to give it some thought.”
Virginia’s Senate race is currently not seen as competitive, but Gillespie’s entry would all-but-guarantee a real battle and could put the state on the map in 2014. Republicans need to pick up six seats to win the upper champer.
“There’s a sense we have an opportunity in 2014 to win the Virginia Senate race,” he said, “and if you were to do that, that would most likely mean that you would get control of the United States Senate, which makes it a very high-stakes race.”

Gillespie, 52, would likely win the nomination if he chose to get in, but he would need to secure it in a convention controlled by activists. Conservatives might force him to answer for the Bush presidency, with an economic record widely criticized from the right, and for his post-White House push for immigration reform.

But don't expect that the RNC will be heroes in VA after they left Cooch to twist in the wind.
And think how amusing it will be to watch Rove show up and beg conservatives to vote.
This will be a good test of how electable a true eGOP will be absent conservative support - because Gillespie won’t find any.

We should encourage the GOP insiders to go after these types of races. They have the resources to put them into play. NJ is a race that needed more professional help.
As conservatives we should concentrate on the low hanging fruit and the most vulnerable Dems and GOPers for replacement by conservatives.
Gillespie is top tier. The seat is Democrat. Get with it guys.

Absolutely. Gillespie is a prototypical Big Government Republican. He is the type of candidate that makes you ask “which Big Government Party do I want to vote for this time?”
Gillespie would truly be an echo, not a choice.

Not logical. Would you rather have a Dick Durbin, Jr. or a Mark Kirk, Jr.? There are too many races in which a conservative candidate cannot win. We need a majority to control committees and move our agenda forward. It’s a hard, long fight we face. We can’t get there without winning.

We’ll get there via thoughtful compromise and putting the “angels in the details”. We need to control Congress for at least a generation. We’re not going to get there in a single leap. We need a long game and long games come with compromise and some losses, but they end with victory.
Honestly, if it came down to any of the aforementioned Rats and Gillespie, I could care less who wins.
What did the TEA Party do for Cooch? He was aching for money and blamed the GOP for not giving him $10 million. Why didn’t the TEA Party fundraise for him? Nationally we couldn’t find a million conservatives willing to donate $10?
There are about 300,000 FReepers. If we each gave 33 dollars Cooch would have had his ten million. Let’s not look at the thorn in the GOPe’s eye and miss the log in our own.
That’s too bad. Control of Congress is critical in getting an agenda put forth. Committee assignments and Committee chairs control what gets done on the floor. That conservatives are such sissy’s that we cannot operate in a hostile environment is a shame on us. We know that for every federal dollar there’s a recipient. Can you create a coalition that will pry that dollar away? I say yes.
It won’t be easy. How much would somebody fight to keep their billion dollar cash flow flowing? It won’t get done if we keep losing or are out of power. We got where we are today because Democrats controlled the levers of power for two generations twice in the 20th century. The old time media is busted open. Our thoughts and agenda are getting out there. We have a chance to capture the Congress and hold it for a generation, perhaps more.
To keep it we need to be statesmen, conservative, but wise as snakes and gentle as lambs. That’s the only way we’ll get our country back. All the tough talk in the world won’t do it. We lost too many winnable races because of weak candidates. Think about it.

The establishment already has the levers of power in hand. Why not simply take this over?
Well, that should not be too hard to do. Bush's economy started to go downhill as soon as he won the Iraq war and the MSM/Dem axis switched to attacking him for an economy that boasted under 5% unemployment despite 2 mean wars.
As soon as Pelosi took the gavel she viciously attacked and brought down the economy in order to pave the way for a socialist President.
