Skip to comments.PPP: GOP Leads Michigan Senate Race, ObamaCare to Blame
Posted on 12/10/2013 4:16:24 PM PST by TheBigB
A new poll from Public Policy Polling (PPP) finds the Michigan GOP Senate candidate, Terri Land, taking the lead over Democrat Rep. Gary Peters in the race to replace retiring Sen. Carl Levin. Land trailed Peters by 7 points in October, at the height of the government shutdown. She now leads Peters by two, 42-40, a nine point swing in less than two months.
"The declining popularity of President Obama and the Affordable Care Act seems to be making life harder for Democrats here, as we're finding in other key Senate races," the Democrat polling firm writes in a memo. Although Obama won Michigan by 9 points last year, his approval ratings are now underwater. Just 47% of Michiganders approve of the job he is doing, while 51% disapprove. Michigan voters also oppose ObamaCare by a 14-point margin.
The big shift in the Michigan race is due largely to Independents. A few months ago, Land and Peters were basically tied among Independents. In the latest poll, Land has opened a massive 17-point lead with the critical voting block.

I’d be stunned if a Republican took this Senate seat. However, I don’t think it will happen. The GOP is too well known for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Especially in Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Wisconsin-—all the teaser states.
MI is forever a lost cause; this is just false alarms.
Probably true, but the fact it’s being reported that ObamaCare is hurting DEMs in DEM states should send shivers down the spines of all DEM candidates nationwide.
Ludicrous claim, especially given the GOP’s success with winning statewide elections.
Independents or as Rush calls them Low Information Voters
Personally I think both labels are too kind.
I prefer to think of them as voters who cant be bothered to pay attention to politics. Lazy voters would be a much more apt descriptor of Independent voters.
Because if they paid the least bit of attention to what was going on in national politics Obama would never have been elected in the first place and he certainly would not have been reelected.
If someone tells me they are an Independent I can be assured that they in reality devote no time what so ever to politics and probably have no idea of what their Senators and Representative have been doing in their name.
What really gets my knickers in a bunch is when someone gives me this attitude that I vote for the man not the party and acts as if this is some how a noble sentiment.
If you cant be bothered to figure out whether you are for Big Government and confiscatory taxes or smaller government and lower taxes maybe you should stay home on voting day. Because no matter the who man is when push comes to shove the man is going to come down on the side of his party 90% or more of the time.
As Thayrone-X would say, "Hey is the game on?" Yes they know all the Stats for U of M football, the Tigers, the Pistons, The Lions, but the intricacies of Obamacare, forgetaboutit...
Things have changed drastically in Michigan. Its major cities have bled population drastically.
It maybe that those centers of Blue voters have dwindled sufficiently to put the state in play.
If it’s nip and tuck in MI, you know the Rats are sweating bullets over AR, AK, NC, and LA.
Why is Combover Carl packing it in? He’s only 79. I thought it was doctrine that lib Senators went from the Capitol bldg to the mortuary?
Lenin said that religion is the opiate of the people.
Not so much anymore. Now it is pro sports and the idiot box.
Seriously let us say we win big in the Senate, and their Leader is Mitch McConnell? Are you kidding me? At this point he is held in about as high esteem as Trent Lott.. In terms of his Politics he is ready for the glue factory for crying out loud.
Who will step up and challenge him and beat him for the House Majority Leader position?
Don’t forget FB, Tweater, and HuffPo, LOL
With Obamacare it’s democrats who are snatching defeat from the jaws of victory... Face it, dems screwed up.
My step daughter actually lost a job because she could not just turn her phone off at work.
I was a rule of her employer that you could not use your phone on the job. Her supervisor caught her too many times and she was fired.
Too bad for her, it was a good job.
Michigan has been trending GOP anyway. At this point the democrats are unable to pick up new house seats and can’t touch in state seats. It also helps that the Secretary of state has her boot on the neck of the democrat vote fraud machine.
The democrats are just throwing everything at defending the senate seats now.
And the Communists are now, openly and brazenly, “winning” elections in the last hour by 1% more of the votes.
Not here they won’t. We have one of the toughest secretaries of state in the country and an attorney general to back her up. Both of them were targets of the fake tea party fraud and take it seriously.
There have already been indictments for vote fraud in Michigan this year. In Detroit they tried to keep the white guy (Democrat) off the ballot so he ran and won the primary as a write in. They then threw out 40% of his votes and declared the other guy the winner. The state stepped in and made them count the votes giving the white guy the win. In the general election the white guy won by 10%. We’ve also got new laws that require oversight of traditionally problem areas. Detroit will still vote Democrat for now but they won’t do it with 200,000 more votes than people.
Last year Hoekstra ran a tough primary then disappeared in the general election against Stabenow. Funny thing is that Stabenow got more votes in Michigan than Obama did.
Not so fast. Michigan is trending red, one of the few states that are. It’s a result of the union collapse and Detroit’s exodus.
We may win this seat. Our candidate is better this time, and theirs sucks. Plus, Obamacare only gets worse as the employer mandate kicks in. Peters will not win if the Republican fortunes hold. Currently, 47% to 42% favor Republicans being in charge of both chambers over Democrats.
Yeah, the commies ALWAYS win the close elections, especially the recounts.
I think your analysis is spot on. It helps that the AG in Michigan has dismantled the rat voter fraud machine.
Peters is no stabacow. He’s boring as heck, and is only good for stirring up minorities with rhetoric. All Land has to do is hammer him on his support for O-zerocare.
THAT is heartening. It needs to spread to every precinct in the country.
Those Democratic voters went somewhere and they are not likely to change their voting habits because they destroyed their home state with those votes.
I am seriously worried that those Democratic voters have gone where the jobs are; conservative states like Texas.
Where ever those Detroiters went they are probably making that state a bit Bluer.
I think many have gone to Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Texas would be too much of a culture shock
The GOP actually opened a party office in Detroit this week. There are a lot of folks working to win the hearts and minds of the people of Detroit and I think we’re doing it little by little.
Who the F is Gary Peters and who the F cares!
Most of the self described Independents I have talked to when questioned in depth about their opinions and knowledge of current events are clueless.
I am as disappointed with the Republican Party as you are but it is the party we have the best chance in changing to a party we can live with.
The Constitution as designed is going to limit us to two parties. The Republican Party supplanted the Whigs. And in all reality the Whigs became the Republican Party.
The Electoral College necessitates that divergent single issue parties form coalitions to gather together enough votes to elect a President. As long as we have the electoral system we have it will be a two party system.
Third parties have been spoilers in the past. They gave us Wilson and Clinton. Experiences I dont think we want to repeat.
Our best option is to work long and hard to drive the Republican Part to the Right. We need to remake the Republican Party in our image.
LOL - what makes it funny is that's it's so true...
If the GOP can elect governors in all the states you mentioned, no reason to think that these states can't elect Republican US Senators as well in statewide elections - if the 'Rats election fraud and cheating is minimized, that is.
Actually Mi is not a lost cause. There is an awakening taking place.
Someone should tell Michigan Republican Congressman Mike Rogers, who won his first congressional election in 2000 in a *very* close contest. And I think that the GOP was able to withstand a recount in Florida that year as well ....
Obamacare is a hurtful and hateful blight on the US. Brought to you by democraps.
They want folks to “just die now”.
The union Nobamacare exemptions won’t last forever. Eventually, they’re going to get hammered.
Regarding Detroit, anyone who isn’t an absolute idiot or for whom the Democrat Party is not a religion, knows that decades of Democrat empty promises have destroyed their city. Whether that will make them angry or vengeful enough to vote GOP is an open question.
The anger and distrust should at least depress voter turnout for Peters.
Peters is cookie cutter rat and Land is 2 time statewide winner. I expected her to have an even chance in that race from the jump.
Michigan is hardly NJ.
Michigan is (or was) traditionally a swing state. The problem there is demographic change over the last several decades. A lot of more conservative people moved to the "Sun Belt" and more recent immigrants and their offspring - most noticeably from the Middle East and other Asians - are more numerous in and around Detroit. The 'Rats capitalized on that, getting both US Senate seats and Jenny Granholm as governor for two terms.
History didn’t end with Granholm. She’s long gone and its a whole different state. It sure wasn’t democrat control that gave us RTW (Which was signed exactly 1 year ago today)
Pro business, pro freedom Democrats? They're just about an extinct species in the age of Obama!
Have you noticed any positive effect on the economy since RTW was signed? (Just asking.)
Also, do you think that the 'Rat candidates will continue to play up Zero's auto industry bailout in Michigan next year?
I think there are positive economic effects but they’re more a result of other GOP economic policies. It would be better if our governor wasn’t a greenie technophile who seems opposed to dirty factories.
RTW has only been in full effect for 6 or 8 months so only a few have even had contract negotiations (when members can opt out). They’ve fallen to infighting and lawsuits among themselves. Its just a drip so far but the unions are beginning to hemorrhage members and they know it.
Business owners are seeking means of speeding union exits from their businesses. I read about one in Jackson a few weeks back that was hiring entry level floor people at higher pay than existing union members make. He’s hiring them as management personnel and personally teaching a business management class in the shop 2 hours per week. The owner gets the added benefit of hiring a new class of shop rat that understands the business end of the job.
Yes. The size of Obama’s victory in 2008 was troubling, McCain got under 41%.
We’ve managed the keep the State Senate this entire time (since what 1976? That is impressive), and the House, most of the time since 1992 (all but 97-98 and 07-10).
Even though Iowa is a better state I’d rank MI ahead of the IA Senate race because Land is top tier candidate and our choices in IA are not. I dismissed initial projections of the race being decidedly in the favor of Peters as rat wishful thinking.
McCain's awful showing in Michigan in '08 was largely do to his well-publicized "pulling out" of the state weeks before Election Day. I guess some voters interpreted that as dissing them, or at least 'Rats tried to make them think that way.
It was because of 2000 that Dims have not lost close elections or recounts since. Dem honchos came out publicly after Gore v. Bush and said they would NEVER again lose a close election.
