For years, American opinion on gay marriage has been shifting. Now lawmakers are in a mad dash to catch up.
In less than two weeks, seven senators--all from moderate or Republican-leaning states--announced their support, dropping one by one like dominos. Taken together, their proclamations reflected a profound change in the American political calculus: For the first time, elected officials from traditionally conservative states are starting to feel it's safer to back gay marriage than risk being the last to join the cause...
"They're reflecting what they're seeing in the polls--except the most extreme of the Republican base," former New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman, a Republican who supports gay marriage, said in an interview. "From a purely political perspective, if you want to be a leader of the future, you look at the next generation. They are overwhelmingly in favor of this."..
Among Republicans, whose party platform opposes gay marriage, the shift in position has mostly been limited to former lawmakers and prominent strategists. Still, a distinct change in tone was palpable this month when Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, a Republican whom presidential candidate Mitt Romney vetted last year as a potential running mate, declared his support, citing a personal conversion stemming from his son coming out to him as gay.
Rather than blast Portman for flouting party dogma or failing an ideological litmus test, Republican leaders shrugged, indicating that even if Republicans, as a party, aren't prepared back gay marriage, they won't hold it against those in their ranks who do...
"It's like immigration. The party realizes they are on the losing side of some of these issues," said former Rep. Jim Kolbe, an Arizona Republican...

Americans are now, have been and forever will be against gay marriage.
You've got that right. What's been shifting is the poll language and the propaganda. There has been at least 3 poll language changes in the longest running poll on the subject, each time neutralizing more the concept of what is really happening.
Homosexual --> Gay
Gay --> Same-sex
etc.
Only, they haven't. Virtually every time citizens are allowed to vote on the subject, they reject it. The elections in 2012 were some of the most corrupt, fraudulent elections in our nation's history. I fully contend that NONE of the marriage redefinition state elections really fell on the side of the sodomites. There is massive circumstantial evidence to back that assertion up.
And Obama didn't even fairly win. All of the swing states fell to him, against almost all the current polls, and there was, again, massive evidence in each of these states of election fraud.
I’m sorry, but there’s so much in there that’s simply not true.
There is no credible evidence of systemic voter fraud. That’s sore-loser excuse making. It gives us a convenient out to avoid a hard look at our strategy and tactics.
Not to mention that everyone who was actually paying attention to the polls in the last month of the election knew without a doubt that Obama was going to be re-elected. Couldn’t have been more clear. The only people thinking otherwise were the ones like Dick Morris, who are paid lots of money to lie to us and tell us what we want to hear, no matter how silly or false.
And here’s the problem with listening to those liars - it’s dangerous. Dangerous because we convince ourselves that we’re doing fine and then get killed on Election Day. Romney fell for this - he swallowed the “un-skewed polls” lie so hard that he more or less shut down his GOTV operations, leaving his volunteers stranded without tools or instructions. If he had instead looked at the situation objectively, he would have doubled and tripled those efforts, rather than canceling them in favor of victory parties.
That’s also the problem with burying our heads in the sand and pretending that voter fraud is somehow widespread and rampant. It excuses our failures and lets us avoid having to figure out where we messed up. So we can go on repeating those mistakes.
I was first attracted to conservatism in high school because the conservatives I knew were steely-eyed realists who saw the world as it was, not as they wanted it to be. Liberals lived in a utopia of their own imaginations, refusing to accept unpleasant truths about the world. What a difference a few decades make - too many conservatives are now living in their own fantasies (dystopias this time). We didn’t lose that election, we were cheated. Nonsense.
I don’t want to repeat 2008. Or 2012. I want a new outcome next time, but we won’t get one if we can’t honestly acknowledge out faults. That’s long past time.
Yep. The first step toward finding a path to victory is “pull your head out of you @$$ so you can see where you are”.
You’re quoting Wikipedia as some sort of authoritative source? Please!
“Support for same-sex marriage generally correlates with lack of religious fundamentalism, young age, higher education, and residence in the Northeast and West Coast.”
So says a CNN (mostly gay employees) poll...
And Hollywood, television shows shove it down our throats...
Look, if I actually wanted anything you seem to think I do, I’d say “sure, let’s keep on doing what we’re doing, because it’s secretly working really well!” Because it isn’t.
If we want to even try to stem this tide, as I’m sure you do too, we need to be honest with ourselves as to what’s working and what’s not. Hint: our strategy of the last half-decade or so is not working.
It’s not surrender to admit that you’re losing, so long as you are willing to change your losing ways.
Too many here would rather hide their heads in the sand and pretend that we’re really winning. That’s a recipe for gay marriage in all 50 states. Myself, I’d rather figure out a better way to stop it. You’ll have to choose which side you want to be on.
He doesn’t have to - there are plenty of polls showing that gay marriage has surpassed 50% nationally. And even though that is inflated by overwhelming support in certain large blue states, the overall trend in everything but the darkest red is still very, very disturbing.
So ball’s in your court - why is all of reality wrong and your hopes are correct? Why should we believe that we’ve already won this fight, against all actual evidence?
The “polls” you refer to are nearly all polls commissioned by homosexual groups. Therefore, the polling questions and the results are suspect.
Consider that wherever counterfeit marriage is enacted, it is nearly always by force, not by a direct vote of the people. This was even true in California, where homo-activists had to go federal to get their will imposed against the people.
And, no, I don’t believe that the four state referendums showing support for marriage redefinition were truly fair elections. There were massive, widespread irregularities in the 2012 elections, and they did NOT represent the views of the people.
Get government out of marriage altogether. Leave it to the churches and the civil stuff to contracts.
What is homosexual marriage without sodomy?
>> Why should we believe that weve already won this fight, against all actual evidence?
You should know that the pronoun “we” is something of an anathema to conservatives.
“I dont believe that the four state referendums showing support for marriage redefinition were truly fair elections. There
were massive, widespread irregularities in the 2012 elections, and they did NOT represent the views of the people.”
The longer we hold on to such bizarre falsehoods, the harder it will be to win national elections. I propose we set aside the loony conspiracy theories and start as soon as possible.
You’re deluded. Drink up.
So... that would be an admission that you don’t have any actual evidence, then?
