JERUSALEM (EJP)---The heaviest winter snowstorm in December since 1953 hit Israel, including Jerusalem, Wednesday night and Thursday, prompting school closures and blocking access routes to the Israeli capital.
The stormy weather was expected to persist into the weekend, with snow reaching elevated areas as far south as the Negev Desert on Friday.
Snow began falling on Mount Hermon in the north. Snow is expected later in the week in areas of northern Israel and the Galilee, as well as in high elevations in central Israel.
The Jerusalem municipality sent out an alert that school studies in the capital were canceled. Courses at the Hebrew University campus on Mount Scopus were also called off for the day.
Snow in Jerusalem is a cause for celebration for Jerusalemites and the many visitors who come to see the worlds most beautiful city painted white, said Jerusalem's Mayor Nir Barkat. We hope the snow wont disappoint, especially for Jerusalems excited children, who are looking forward to it.
Several major traffic arteries were closed throughout the country on Thursday morning, including parts of the tunnel road between Jerusalem and Hebron, and stretches of the Dead Sea road.
The Jerusalem-bound lanes on Route 1 were intermittently closed between Latrun and Jerusalem.
Temperatures are expected to be several degrees colder than usual for the rest of the week and dropping each day.
High winds have prevented flights from leaving the Sde Dov airport in Tel Aviv and slowed air traffic at Ben Gurion International Airport.
In Tel Aviv, parts of the citys boardwalk were under water due to heavy amounts of rain. Authorities threatened to close the major Ayalon Highway as the Ayalon River continues to rise.
As a result of the snowstorm, US Secretary of State John Kerry's scheduled meeting with Israel President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Brenjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Thursday was postponed.
You know, it’s amazing how the global warming has screwed things up. Sorry Israel. My car still passes the wrong kind of gas.
Shut up trees! Your voices don’t count.
Israel in White: Your Pictures
As snow descends on Israel’s Biblical heartland, Arutz Sheva presents a collection of your pictures from Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem.
As Israel experiences its first major snowfall of the year - with all the accompanying school and road closures - Israelis are taking the opportunity to enjoy the sheet of white that has descended on the Biblical heartlands of Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem.
Below are some pictures sent to Arutz Sheva by some of our readers (For pictures of snow in Jerusalem in 1921 and 1942, click here):
Psalm 68:14 (New American Standard Bible)
“When the Almighty scattered the kings there, It was snowing in Zalmon.”
On a globe warming up, IT’S A MIRACLE!!
A snow man in front of the Dome of the Rock?
Those Palis at the Dome of the Crock will put a suicide vest on him. Just watch!
IceAgeNow.info is carrying the story, too.
If you want to keep an eye on the Yam HaKinneret (Sea of Galilee for those of you in Rio Linda) go to this link.
It looks like the lake level bottomed out about 2DEC2013 and is now on its way back up. I’m hoping that the water level gets so high they have to open the spillway at Degania Dam in order to relieve the pressure.
IIRC, the last time they did that was in 1992.
Well, how much did they have? 1/2 inch? 2 inches?
The forecast on Wunderground says it’ll be snowing from now until Shabbat.
Yam HaKinneret (Sea of Galilee for those of you in Rio Linda)
A snowstorm hit Mount Hermon on Thursday, after dozens of centimeters of snow have accumulated on the mount since Tuesday. Snow also pelted the northern city of Safed on Thursday evening. Dozens of millimeters of rain have fallen in the Gush Dan (the Tel Aviv area), Sharon and Galilee regions since Wednesday night.
Winter settles in, parts of Israel blanketed with snow
Oh, because Jews speak Hebrew over there.
Now, Jesus OTH, spoke King James English and drank only Welches grape juice. (Yes, there are some people that actually believe that!)
Roads to Jerusalem blocked due to snow
This link as well as the other news stories about the snow all have great photos. Enjoy!
I’m just tellin ya Yam HaKinneret is never going to stick in my brain and it’s not because I’m an anti-Semite.
Wow!! Looks like thousands of centimeters to me. Whatever that is. LOL.
