Paul Ryan's presidential prospects may have dimmed this week, but his future on Capitol Hill has never looked brighter.
The budget compromise he struck with Sen. Patty Murray, which passed the House on a lopsided 332-94 vote Thursday, had conservative activists and outside groups howling. That might one day curb Republican enthusiasm for Paul Ryan the presidential candidate.
But inside the dome, overwhelming support for Paul Ryan the policymakereven from those voting against his proposalarmed him with a major legislative victory and a reputation as a bipartisan consensus-builder. That means bigger things may be on the horizon.
"Paul did astonishingly well. He was at a profound disadvantage in those negotiations, and I think he did amazingly well," said Rep. Trent Franks, an Arizona Republican who ultimately opposed the agreement.

Not so fast, b&tchboy. Ryan has betrayed uas. He deserves nothing.
Ryan would be a vast improvement over what we have to day.
My guess is that Boehner will try as hard as he can to pass amnesty, will take all the hits and then will retire next year to a quiet villa somewhere down in Mexico.
In fact, I don’t even think he should be in the House. He is deserving of his nickname because he is Patty Murray’s b****
He sold us out to the other side, and that’s referenced as him negotiating very well. I’m sure Harry Ried, Nancy Pelosi, and Barack Obama agree.
I sure hope he doesn’t get to negotiate Hawaii’s and Guam’s fate with China.
We are officially screwed if they get amnesty. NO to Ryan.
Sorry. No sale.
Yeah, he has better control over his tear ducts. Otherwise, same old same old.
I dont see Ryan as much of an improvement. Just rearrangement of deck chairs. We need a strong leader in that position. Neither Ryan nor Boehner have any balls.
Then again a steaming pile of dog shit would be a vast improvement over Boehner.
Maybe we need to set our sights a bit higher? Say, bring back Newt Gingrich to be House Speaker? Seriously. No one has to be a member of Congress to be named Speaker, or have you forgotten that point?
He’s dead to me.
This must be halted. We need to nominate someone who actually represents us for Speaker. STEVE KING!!!!!
See ????, a replacement for Bohner being groomed ......Paul Ryan
Dont forget his balanced budget resolution.
It seems those replying on this thread seem to forget, that we, the electorate have no say so in who is elected SOH. Zip, nada, nothing. We are so screwed!
Lightweight collectivist gang-member Murray eviscerated the wannabe-vp, rolled-over, budget clown. Paint some tears on your face clown. The House Lootership awaits you, budget guy. Check$ and Balance$ of plunderers.
Look up “disappointment” in the Webster and you’ll see a picture of Ryan.
When was the last time a speaker of the house was elected president?..................
Don’t take too long to answer.............
You can phone your congressman and get them to support Steve King for Speaker.
He’s a dirtbag - no doubt. He got his pants whipped off in the election because he was a miserable salesman for his product and now he’s trying to change the product line, since he can’t alter his personality.
I really can’t stand this guy anymore. He’s right up there with Linda Graham, Juan McCain, Conyers, Cantor, Boehner et al.
Defintely NOT an improvement.
We need a tactician that has genetic traits of a bulldog.
Sell out conservatives...check
Ryan is the next boy who has been groomed to Infiltrate all that is American and convert it to Ash. But the sheeple will never get it.
Could ANYONE guess how much the Vichy Republicans would grovel at the feet of their Democratic ideologues if FreeRepublic didn’t exist? With this capitulation of Ryan and Boehner we have truly entered a one party system
I look forward to his demise and his defeat. ryan is not worthy to serve anyone but leftists.
“Ryan would be a vast improvement over what we have to day”.
“Yeah, he has better control over his tear ducts. Otherwise, same old same old”.
^^^^^^ Exactly my take.
But then, I was not enamored w/ Ryan as the VP choice...so I’ve not exactly fallen off the Ryan wagon...as I was never on said wagon.
If the GOPe go for ‘immigration reform’...Katie bar the doors...that’s not going to end pretty for any of those guys/gals.
From Boehner to Ryan—out of the frying pan, into the fire.
A pox on both of these Big Government jerks.
Please...Even you don’t believe your drivel or you wouldn’t have added the last sentence. Free Republic in its latest iteration is a shadow of its former self. Most of the conservatives I encounter have never heard of Free Republic.
The orange drunk will retire to Jamaica with his rasta son-in-law and smoke ganja and drink whiskey until he meets ted kennedy at his ultimate retirement destination.
In what alternative universe would Paul Ryan be an improvement over the insufferable quisling appeaser who now runs the House?
Did you not notice that he just rolled over for Pelosi, Reid, and Obama? Geeeez......
Not an improvement
Let me guess, that suck up from North Texas would move up too?
Unfortunately, my congressman votes with bonehead on most everything. Another useless RINO.
At the rate Ryan is going the job he is campaigning for will be Minority Leader.
I will say at least Ryan is a coherent sell out, as opposed
to bubble mouth Boehner.
Also, you bring up a good point, on Boehner Amnesty. Boehner taking the lead on Amnesty and then perhaps retire does relieves Ryan from having to lead on that battle, even if he will certainly vote for it. There is a small but real difference, I’m thinking.
AMEN! he's my rep and I love him to death! He'd make a GREAT speaker!
Yup. That’s what he was promised all right.
Huh? Who are you talking about?
What’s his name... one of Boneheads sycophants
is it Pete Sessions or Hensarling or something?
Probably Jeb Hensarling. I don't know a lot about the guy, but he's been on the Hill for a long time now. Others have remarked here that he's little more than an establishment foot soldier.
How does someone in the majority have a “profound disadvantage” in the negotiations? Pathetic.
The next speaker should be Steve King.
So you just hang around to harass others then?
Ryan is headed for the unemployment line.
Ryan is a liar. Boehner is a liar. Obama is a liar. Pelosi is a dumbsh^t and a liar. What’s to choose from? The guy who lies to my enemy and me is not a liar?
They vote for Amnesty, can you imagine how many of us will stay home in 14'? Nevermind how many who stayed home because of Romney wasn't the real deal for a host of reasons in 12' that will be a flippin' cake-walk compared to what 14' will be.... Their flirting with disaster....
If that’s what it takes to turn this place back to an activist site rather than a coffee klatch for whiners, you bet!
