Does it make the issue go away? No way.
No A&E isn’t exposed to suit. Guarantee there’s a bad press clause in the contract. And yes they do care what people say on FB, especially when what they’re saying is “we’re boycotting”. They know word of mouth is still the most effective form of advertising ever invented and social media has only made it more effective. ACLU won’t be coming after them. Advertisers don’t like controversy, as soon as this blew up the advertisers started running scared, they know how this goes, boycotts and counter boycotts. They also know how it all blows over, the big thing the advertisers want is for everybody involved to STFU and let it blow over so the ratings don’t get dinged next month.
The issue ain’t going. It’s been playing in one form or another for over a century, probably closer to a couple millennia if you really think about it. And nothing the Robertsons say or don’t say is going to change how it goes.
A&E is exposed to suit from the gay lobby groups, as is any company or association in this country, now that the big outfits have gone over. Even if they win, they can’t because money runs scared. Which is why Aristotle said that a plutocracy is the worst of all forms of government. It has no moral core.
The immediate issue is political and goes back maybe thirty years.

No. The issue is was and always will be social. It’s about how the massed deal with the outliers. The political aspect of this is merely politicians following the wind, the current wind is mostly OK with gays, so the politicians mostly are too. Politicians very rarely lead, they’re born followers.
The issue right now is quite political. It stopped being a social issue to be left in the hand sof private parties after Bill Clinton became president and began pushing the gay rights agenda for the military.
Nope, it’s still social. The biggest “gay agenda” thing Clinton pulled off was “don’t ask don’t tell”, which 12 years later had become a horrible thing that needed to be repealed immediately... but not in the way you want. Because society had changed, in the 90s gay acceptance had advanced just far enough to let them in the military as long as they were closeted, by the 10s society had mellowed dramatically about it so the politicians following as always bowed to the people and now gays are in without the closet. But neither of those steps happen if the people hadn’t changed.
