NEW ORLEANS Karen Sandoval's promising life in this city fell apart in one day last summer when she went to buy school supplies for her two daughters.
Sandoval, a Honduran immigrant here illegally, was riding with the man her girls have always called their father. Immigration agents, seeing a dilapidated car, pulled them over. They released Sandoval but detained her partner, a Nicaraguan also here illegally, and he was soon deported.
Now Sandoval, 28, is grieving her loss and scrambling to support her children without her partner, Enrique Morales, and the income from his thriving flooring business. She sees no future for the girls, who are both American citizens, in her home country or his. So Sandoval is facing the possibility that she may never see Morales again.
"It is very difficult to explain to two little girls that Daddy will not be with us anymore," Sandoval said.
Since taking office, President Barack Obama has deported more than 1.9 million foreigners, immigration officials announced last week, a record for an American president. The officials said they focused on removing criminals, serious immigration offenders and recent border crossers, with 98 percent of deportees in 2013 in those groups, while sparing workers and their families. Obama is also pressing for an overhaul of immigration laws with a path to citizenship for those here illegally.
But immigrant leaders say the enforcement has a broad impact on their communities, with deportations still separating bread-winning parents from children and unauthorized immigrants from family members here legally, including American citizens.

what ‘surge’ in deportations??? last I saw the O admin had dropped out of that game pretty much all together
And I've got a nice little bridge in Brooklyn that I'm willing to let go cheap.
He's a real hero, I tell ya. A hero!
look for more stories like this over the next month or so. The media will do what they can to carry Obama’s water on “immigration reform”..
nothing but cover for amnesty
This is a way to distract people from the fact our unemployment rate is unreasonably high, and there are no jobs.
Yet businesses want MORE IMMIGRATION.
No. Enforce our borders, and stop bringing in illegals at least until the unemployment rate falls below 5%.
5% at most in my opinion.
Not one bit higher.
That’s a damn lie. They think they can say anything and folks our here will buy it. No sale.
Deportation is what happens when an illegal votes for a Republican and they find out.
Yeah, I fear it’s all a sham and they’ll pass amnesty next year. You mean that kind of fear?
Maybe Sandoval will use his newly learned American inginuity and floorimg talents to help Honduras become a country that is more accepting of illegal imigrants?
Yeah, my business would thrive, too, if I weren't constantly paying local, state, and federal taxes and endlessly recurring and increasing assessments and regulatory fees.
Good. Maybe if they're so fearful they'll leave on their own accord and save the taxpayers a buck or two.
On your way out, don't let the door hit you where the Good Lord split you.
I still think we should deploy the National Guard and the militias to the border - shoot on sight, as a hostile invader, any illegals trying to cross. Add landmines for additional security.
If the liberals keep shedding tears for the illegal invaders, they'll cry another river the illegals will have to swim across.
>> “It is very difficult to explain to two little girls that Daddy will not be with us anymore,” Sandoval said.
LOL, cuz Daddy ain’t worth the freebies....
I fear being arrested after robbing banks.
The international left intends to swamp western societies with third world immigration. If it happens, we are doomed.
I am listening to an internet radio station, and the advertising programming is “different”...
They just had a commercial on for health care for ALL ‘Americans’ including ILLEGALS.
From something called “The California Endowment” which when I looked it up, appears to be a boatload of liberal turds.
I wonder how much tax funding they get
"So Sandoval is facing the possibility that she may never see Morales again."
I'm sure both Honduras and Nicaragua allow an immigrant foreigner to marry a citizen. Just pick a country, and the other spouse moves there. It should be nearly automatic.
But, of course, it's tougher if they want to live together in a country where they have no right to reside. Then yes, any chance encounter with an LEO can change all that. Maybe they should live where they have a residence permit? It's not healthy to be on the lam for their whole life.
I'm sure Mr. Morales, being such a good businessman, will have a new business up and running at home, in Nicaragua, in no time. (Unless that business depends on not being registered with the state, and not paying taxes, and not having a shingle to hang out.)
Is it that “Health4All” campaign I see plastered all over bush shelters and BART stations here in the SF Bay Area? That’s a pretty aggressive campaign and it’s all about insuring illegal aliens.
