Multimillionaire philanthropist Robert W. Wilson, 86, took his own life Monday by throwing himself from his luxury Upper West Side high-rise apartment, just a few months after suffering a debilitating stroke, sources said.

The former Wall Street hedge fund titan — who donated hundreds of millions to charity — left a note before leaping at about 11 a.m. from the 16th floor of the famed San Remo, which overlooks Central Park West, cops said.

“He was 86 and suffered a stroke a few months ago,” said Wilson’s friend, Stephen Viscusi.

“He always said he didn’t want to suffer, and when the time came, he would be ready.”

From another story -

Robert Wilson was an 86-year-old Wall Street mogul whose personal fortune was estimated to be about $800million- but he recently told friends he had given all but $100million to charity. He apparently could not give away the rest because it was tied up in long-term investments.

Wouldn’t someone who has a stroke be incapacitated? How did he find the strength to leap?

There’s a tremendous variance with strokes.

I had one 18 months ago. A friend had one about the same time and didn’t recover.

Sad. Hope he found Jesus on the way down. I think of two things when I hear these stories. One is Billy in Carrousel who killed himself and ended up in heaven as a barker on a merry go round. The other is the woman in the Russian story (I read this in The Brother’s Karamazov). The mean (in the original sense) woman in the village wouldn’t give anything to anyone. One winter a man decided to make soup and he only had a stone. He started boiling the soup and people started bringing bits and pieces of things to put in it. Finally the old woman gave a single dried onion. The soup was then given to the entire village. In the course of time she died and as she was rocketing towards hell, she saw the stem of that old dried onion and she grabbed onto it. When she did, she was able to swing herself into heaven. So God loves us so much that it doesn’t take much. What I have learned is, why wait? I am finding heaven on earth.

Something tells me his suffering has just begun.

OK, you’re 86. If the stroke wouldn’t get you, it would be something else.

Strokes cause brain damage, and can lead to anger/depression.
It’s a sad situation, I feel badly for Mr Wilson and his family.

Just glad he didn’t hurt or kill anyone on the ground.

There is a Seinfeld comment here somewhere but I’ll just agree with Mercat and hope that he found Jesus in time.

I am so sorry for this man. He had “everything” and yet nothing.

IMHO, this world is a test. If you keep the Faith in Him, no matter what, you pass the test. But, if you don’t believe, or quit before the test has run its course, you run the risk.

Maybe he was a good man, a philanthropist, but did he belief?

I pray that God is on his side.

If you must do it, don't do it in such a way as to endanger and/or traumatize everyone around you.

Guy like that could easily acquire enough painkillers to do it quietly.

It’s not the fall that kills you, it’s the sudden stop at the bottom.

This makes no sense. This guy lived a full life and donated millions. He chose not live out his last days in pain and or incapacitated. Now “god” is going to sentence him to an eternity in a lake of fire? For what purpose. Just to show him? Is god a sadist?
