Most handicappers have believed for months that Republicans have a good chance to pick up a Montana Senate seat next year. But once again, Democrats have a plan that just may help them hold that seat. Its a plan that worked in the past, but will it work once again? According to multiple media reports, President Barack Obama is set to appoint Democratic Sen. Max Baucus as the next ambassador to China. If Baucus is confirmed and vacates his seat, Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock will get to appoint his successor until the November 2014 elections.

The slime of those “in power” never ceases to amaze. Is there no justice?
It would be funny to see the Republicans filibuster the nomination for Ambassador. But they would never do that...
There has to be a mechanism for recalling appointees, or you could get a governor who collaborates with the various other elected reps to have them simply vacate early, so he can keep appointing politically-motivated replacements.
The other possibility is to start a recall on the Governor on the basis of his cronyism, and make it clear that the cronyism is the reason. Just the existence of such a petition might be enough to give him cold feet about doing backroom deals like this, even if the petition never reaches a ballot.
This is one reason you don’t elect Democrat Governors.
Did Christie appoint a Republican when he had a chance to do so?
Of course, you have to get rid of the bot voting with illegal machines; etc.
Defeating the will of the People is the Obama way
I’ll believe it when I see it. We were supposed to pick up Jon Tester’s seat too, but instead he is in ‘till 2018.
MT over and over rejects Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate and usually governor as well.
“Just the existence of such a petition might be enough to give him cold feet about doing backroom deals like this, even if the petition never reaches a ballot.”
Successful people in politics study it the way a sports nut knows his team. A sporty knows which player has a bum wrist and who just had ACL surgery. A politician is a gambler who evaluates the opponent, his funding, his organizational effectiveness, who is backing him, etc. To be effective, a recall effort has to be credible. Even then, it can seldom work as a threat. The effort will have to go balls-to-the-wall and win. Only in very rare circumstances does it actually win and the experienced political gambler knows this. He knows he’ll seldom lose even if he just stands pat and waits it out.
The media will set traps for the Republican... find someone nimble enough to avoid them and well known enough so the Democrats would have a hard time smearing the candidate and we should win this. If the Democrat hinted a positive comment about simulus or obamacare you wack them until the bleed. Simple formula but effective.
There’s a little more than 10 months to go until the election. That’s a heck of a lot of time in politics. But given the projected rolling impacts (very negative ones) of Obamacare during that timeframe and the likelihood of the Dems finding a candidate who can effectively distance him or herself from those impacts, from the Democrat Party and from Obama, this is best seen as a desperation hail-Mary play to keep the seat.
The truth is that the Republicans in Montana will be running exactly the same kind of campaign McConnell has been (and should he survive against Bevins can be expected to) running in Kentucky - pointing out that the Dem opponent is a hand-picked party lackey.
“The media will set traps for the Republican... find someone nimble enough to avoid them and well known enough so the Democrats would have a hard time smearing the candidate”
A successful senate candidate will spend, on average, $10million dollars. It’s hard to find somebody who is nimble enough, smart enough, well connected enough and who can raise that kind of money. You end up with people sincere but stupid enough to say “women who are raped don’t get pregnant,” or who are in it for the money. There aren’t too many conservatives who meet the criteria. When they do show up the get Palinized by the media. As great as she is it would be nearly impossible for her to overcome the weight of the MSM.
The people of Montana still vote and they are no longer in love with the rats... and America has awakened to the trickery of evil. I pray that I am right.
I think we have even had Governors make deals with Lt Governors to resign and accept an appointment to the Senate.
Democrats are ruthless, remember when they withdrew their candidate and replaced him with another when it was clear that they would lose?
Not to mention when Cristy refused to appoint a Republican to Kerry's position opting to instead hold an election likely to avoid facing Booker in his own race. GOPe is just as evil, just not as smart.
Yes, but he was a seat warmer... for Democrat Cory Booker.
Narrowly rejected for the Senate, though with Dem voter fraud being what it is, one wonders how many of those races over the past 9 decades may have been stolen. As for the Governorship, the GOP has held it for almost half the period in the last 5 decades.
